Salary: $3,700.00 – $5,615.00 Monthly 

Responsibilities:

• Acts as one of the region’s timber cruising specialists.
• Review planned sales for possible problems in stand management objectives and operational impacts and recommend adjustments to district staff.  
• Ensures timber cruises meet all agency policies and guidelines.
• Verifies that sale acreages needed for accurate volume determination are correct.
• Independently performs timber cruises on timber sales (scale, lump sum, and tonnage).
• Understands different cruise methods (i.e., 100%, variable plot, ITS, 3P, tariff, etc.) and applies appropriate methods to each sale cruised.  
• Determines cruise pattern, grades, and measures trees for gross and net volume by species.  
• Delineate project treatment boundaries that ensure feasible operations that comply with all policies, rules, and regulations.
• Evaluate, classify, and delineate stream and wetland RMZs and WMZs to ensure streams and wetlands are typed accordingly and all boundaries are of the correct size and are clearly marked.
• Conduct compliance on timber sale contracts and contract clauses ensuring contractual obligations are clearly understood by the contractor or purchaser.  
• Develops a harvest plan of operation using recon info, consultations with specialists, and other foresters that ensures the economic and operational viability of a timber sale or silviculture activity; and provides appropriate resource protections identified in DNR policies, procedures, and forest practice requirements.
• Independently recommend changes to project layout and design using professional experience of logging systems and equipment limitations including contractual constraints to reduce environmental impacts and minimize financial burdens to the State.
• Assist in the appraisal and evaluation of timber harvest or silvicultural proposals utilizing the residual value (RV) application accounting for current ecological conditions, rules, regulations, and other potential impacts.

Qualifications

This may be filled as an in-training position. This is designated as a 12-24 month training plan. If you complete all elements of the training steps in a shorter amount of time, we may waive the remainder of the time required. Candidates will be considered as Natural Resource Specialist 1 (NRS2 In-Training) or Natural Resource Specialist 2, depending on qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

Natural Resource Specialist 1 (NRS2 In-Training)  
(Salary range: $3,700 – $4,968 per month):

• A season (or internship) of entry-level forestry experience, or forestry-related college courses, with experience involving forest inventory.
• Experience using GPS equipment.
• Knowledge of logging and forest road layout.
• Experience using computers and programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Knowledge of cruising and forestry.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
• Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.
• Proven written and verbal skills.
• Knowledge of forest management objectives, timber management objectives, and silvicultural practices.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks, and adapt to changing needs.

Natural Resource Specialist 2  
(Salary range: $4,174-$5,615 per month):

• Associate degree in a natural resource field AND two years of cruising and forestry knowledge and experience at the entry-level, with primary duties involving forest inventory collection and statistical analysis OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Experience using GPS equipment and ESRI GIS program to map unit boundaries and road layouts.
• Logging and forest road layout experience.
• Demonstrated Experience using computers and programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
• Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.
• Proven written and verbal skills.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks and adapt to changing needs.
• Knowledge of contracting procedures.
• Knowledge of Cruising Principals and Theory; application of cruise design and method; statistics and analysis; cruising software applications; log scaling methods and principles.
• Knowledge of eastside forest management objectives, timber management objectives, and silvicultural practices.
