GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direct supervision of the wildlife biologist for Alazan Bayou WMA, the Intern is responsible for assisting staff in all facets of Wildlife Management Area (WMA) operations. Responsible for conducting general maintenance and development activities within the Pineywoods Ecosystem Project which includes Alabama Creek, Alazan Bayou, Angelina-Neches/Dam B, Bannister, Moore Plantation, North Toledo Bend, Sam Houston National Forest and Tony Houseman Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Duties include, but are not limited to general maintenance to WMA buildings, public use facilities, fencing, roads, wildlife openings, wildlife water developments, assisting with wildlife surveys, research including handling live animals, and habitat management activities including prescribed burning, herbicide application, mowing, disking, etc. Responsible for posting boundary signs on various Public Hunting Land units in East Texas. Safely operates various types of vehicles including truck, ATV, boat, tractor/implements, and other equipment (including powered and non-powered hand-tools, compass, computers, and GPS). Performs work activities under harsh field conditions in hot and humid environment such as marshes, swamps, thickets, and forests. These habitats are home to potentially dangerous wildlife including alligators, feral hogs, venomous snakes, and biting insects. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
NOTE: This position will be stationed at The Sam Houston National Forest WMA in New Waverly.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months.
Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at the time of application.
Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or “Pass” on a Pass/Fail system.
Experience:
None required.
Licensure:
Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a class “C” Texas driver’s license.
NOTE: Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university enrolled in Wildlife Science or closely related Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program.
