Job Description:

EDF Trading is a leader in the international wholesale energy markets. The company manages a portfolio of assets which give it the ability to source, supply, transport, store, blend and convert physical commodities around the world. These capabilities enable EDF Trading to deliver essential asset optimisation services, risk management and wholesale market access to the EDF Group and its third party customers, helping them to realise the value inherent in their asset portfolios.

EDF Trading is active in the electricity, natural gas, LNG, LPG and environmental products markets. It is one of the largest wholesale market traders in Europe for power and gas and one of the leading marketers of gas and power in the US. Its affiliate, EDF Energy Services is one of the main providers of generation services for power generation companies in the US and a leading US energy retailer for large commercial and industrial customers. In 2017, EDF Trading broadened the scope of its coal and freight activities in the form of a minority (33%) stake in JERA Trading, one of the leading utility backed global coal traders.

Department

Operations IT Delivery Team – a team from the wider EDFT IT function. The team provides comprehensive front-line IT custom development and support for the power/gas Traders and Analysts.

The team is based on the front office trading floor, has a broad range of complementary skill sets and is dynamic yet highly disciplined in its approach. Working on one of the key interfaces between the business and IT, a good understanding of the commodity trading business context in which the applications are used, as well as solid IT software engineering practices are both of paramount importance.

Position purpose

Design, develop and support (when required) software as part of the Operations IT Delivery Team of custom-built, multi-asset class, front-office applications and tools in a variety of technologies, primarily using a Microsoft toolset.

We are looking for someone who is entirely flexible about working with different technologies (legacy and newer) with the aim of making a difference for our critical business users.

The team has a very flat structure with an emphasis on getting the job done, regardless of job title. As such, developers must be prepared to do their own analysis and testing in some situation.

In addition, this senior technical position has responsibilities to contribute to improving EDF Trading development processes, as well as participate in evolving the architectural road map.

Main Responsibilities:

Development

Engage with users to gather requirements and take ownership for the delivery of development work within the agreed timelines.

Use technology appropriately and flexibly, taking into consideration the company’s strategy and recommendations.

Adhere to the company’s standards and best practices, including, but not limited to, documentation, testing and peer review

Ensure maintenance of the development infrastructure required by the above tools. In particular, maintenance the source code repository, continuous build and deployment facilities

Seek opportunities to deliver business value via innovation. That requires being up-to-speed with technology trends and being able to select (and apply) new technologies where appropriate.

Support to the Business

Engage with the business to assist them in defining their requirements

Provide technical advice to the business users by identifying the most appropriate tools/processes for any given task.

Be available to eventually sit alongside the users (traders, analysts and / or structurers) for extended periods of time

Working with the appropriate IT business analysts, and engage with the desk heads, traders and analysts to assist them in understanding and defining their requirements for pricing and risk analytics tools.

Engagement with IT

Engage closely with the other IT teams as appropriate. Use the ‘front line of IT’ role to help the other IT Development teams see business opportunities and challenges.

Work with the other developers and IT Operations to contribute to actively progress EDFT IT technology stack and development process such as release procedures and continuous integration.

Keep abreast of industry technological developments and identify opportunities to implement new frameworks, technologies and tools to provide a more efficient and effective service to the Business.

Experience required

Previous experience in a senior development role working closely with both IT and business customers

Experience in the design and construction of software/application solutions

Understanding of software development patterns and how they are commonly applied in today’s development industry

Experience in or exposure to solutions that are BI/analytical in nature, employing more data centric architectures.

Ability to work with business and technical stakeholders to deliver suitable solutions

Knowledge of application development methodologies to create business focussed software solutions

Minimum 10 years’ experience in design and implementation of bespoke software solutions

Ideally the above knowledge and experience will have been gained in a top tier energy trading house, investment bank or a leading software house specialising in providing software based solutions.

Technical requirements

The candidates will have experience of working with teams designing and developing solutions utilising most of the following technologies:

Distributed system development using Microsoft .Net 6 or 7 using C#

Infrastructure As Code using Terraform

Queuing technologies such as Azure ServiceBus

Azure Functions, App Configuration, Key Vault and Managed Identity

No Sql databases such as Cosmos DB

Relational database (Oracle or SQL Server preferred), ability to read and amend Stored Procs

Application deployment experience using Docker and Kubernetes on AKS cluster

Required experience:

Previous experience working with internal business users

Good understanding of financial products, preferably commodity derivatives

Mathematically minded with some exposure to financial maths

Agile development experience such as Kanban or Scrum

Good understanding of APIs

Good understanding of Software best practices such as SOLID, DRY

The candidate will have an understanding of the following development techniques:

Test-driven Development and associated techniques such as Inversion of Control

Ideally, the candidate should have knowledge in some of the following technologies:

GitHub for continuous integration, automated test execution and source code management or other similar code management tools

End to End Test Automation experience is beneficial but not essential

Person specification

Experienced in working under pressure with traders and demanding front office users

Excellent analytical and technical skills

Ability to understand the long-term (“big picture”) and short-term perspectives of situations

Good written and verbal communication skills and proven ability to translate business needs into clear and comprehensive solution design requirements.

Capacity to understand business-processes quickly. The ability to communicate complex subjects at different levels (e.g. to traders, IT developers, senior managers)

Strong academic background, educated to degree level and / or equivalent professional qualification or relevant business experience

Hands-on approach, flexible with a positive outlook.

Attention to detail and strong focus on accuracy of information.

Able to multitask, switch focus and prioritise own tasks under pressure.

Takes ownership of any issues that come up and facilitates their resolution quickly using own initiative while managing expectations.

A passionate and versatile technologist with a strong interest in energy commodity trading

Hours of work:

8.30am – 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Hybrid working with two days in the office. However the candidate will be expected to be flexible in order to meet project deadlines.
