Facilities Management (FM) provides maintenance, grounds, and custodial services to the entire campus. FM serves as a partner within the zone structure for the Contract Colleges (CC), Endowed (EN), and Student and Campus Life (SCL) zones.
As a key steward of the University’s facilities, FM is responsible for facility assessments, skilled trades, general construction, building care, grounds, recycling, asbestos, and the management of planned, corrective, and preventive maintenance.

   

Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform manual labor and other work in support of trades people.  Drive trucks used for pick-up and delivery of materials.  Gain basic knowledge and experience in construction trades, tools, materials, and terminology.  Must become a member of the Laborers’ Union within 30 days of employment.

Assist union trades people (carpenter, plumber, painter, mason, sheet metal worker, electrician, refrigeration technician, and control technician) in the performance of their work. 

Become familiar in the use of tools, materials and other equipment used in various trades, as well as the maintenance of same.  Operate small equipment such as jackhammer, tampers, core-bore machine, etc.

Operate multiple types of equipment, such as forklifts, boom lifts and man lifts.

Pick up and deliver supplies, materials, tools, etc., job sites, drive large delivery trucks.  Load and unload materials and equipment.  Return unused materials, supplies, and tools to the shop.

Act as union tender at job sites, i.e., mix mortar, carry block for mason, prepare surfaces for painter, hold pipe for plumber, hand dig trenches for carpenter building sidewalk forms, etc.

Clean job sites during and after trades people have completed the project.

Keep shop areas clean and free from hazards.  Become familiar with safety policies and procedures.

Clean windows, move furniture and lab equipment, and assist in setup of special events.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Work schedule to vary but mainly 1st shift with a starting time between 5:30 am and 9am.

This is an endowed, union position within the BTC Contract. The starting pay rate is $26.11/hour.

We require these qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.  Enthusiasm and interest in and ability to learn the building trades field required.

  • Good communication, teamwork, and customer relations skills are strongly desired.

  • Must be able to articulate and follow through on instructions received from trades superintendent and others, and to handle multiple (and sometimes conflicting) priorities.

  • Mechanical aptitude or some unskilled construction or related experience/familiarity is helpful (examples could include building systems/maintenance, inventory/warehouse, delivery driver, shipping/receiving, safety, or other areas).

  • Some knowledge of construction terminology, equipment, tools, and materials used in a variety of construction activities is helpful.

  • Must be able to get certified to drive multiple types of equipment such as fork lift, boom lift and man lift. 

  • Must be able to work in a construction environment including dust, noise and all weather conditions. 

  • Use of employer-provided safety equipment is required. 

  • Position will be required to constantly perform strenuous physical labor; must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds, and have sufficient flexibility to crawl in small spaces, attics, confined and isolated places, in trenches/ditches, and elevated areas on scaffolding etc.  Must be able to wear employer-provided safety equipment, such as a respirator.  May be required to take physical exam.

  • Must be available to work overtime as duties require, including weekends.  Possibility of shift work.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own       vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.

  • Able to drive and maneuver large delivery trucks.

  • May be required to obtain DOT certification.

  • May be required to use personal vehicle on the job.
