Position Summary:
The Trades Specialist (Mason Plasterer) position is located within the Facilities Department at the University. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for:
- Constructing forms.
- Laying building materials such as stone, brick, concrete cinder block to construct or repair walls, partitions, utility manholes, walkways and stairs, firebrick linings in furnaces and chimneys.
- Following blueprints and specifications by measuring distance from reference points and marking guidelines on working surfaces.
- Mixing mortar; spreading on working surfaces.
- Smoothing and finishing surfaces of poured concrete floors, walls and sidewalks to specified texture.
- Applying ceramic tiles to walls, floors and ceilings.
- Applying plaster to walls and ceilings.
- Repairs broken or loose plaster and other masonry surfaces.
- Erecting scaffolding and ladders and work from them as needed.
- Observing and inspecting the work in progress to insure job quality.
- Overseeing a small work crew of semiskilled workers.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, you must have one or more of the following:
- Four (4) years of full-time experience in masonry under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in masonry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services program. Apprenticeship training in masonry or training gained by completion of technical courses in masonry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year for year basis.
- Successful completion of an NYS two-year Mason & Plasterer Traineeship or NYS two-year masonry training program;
- Successful completion of any equivalent masonry two-year training or apprenticeship program;
- Four (4) years of full-time experience in masonry under a skilled tradesperson.
*Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on the job training.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must posses a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Quick learner and exhibit self motivational skills.
- Adequate ability to understand specialty masonry and plastering systems.
- Knowledge of the standards practices, processes, tools, equipment, and materials of masonry and plastering.
- Strong team mentality.
- Willing to earn technical certification’s, relevant training, or other documentation that illustrates depth in this trade.
- Understand and execute safe work practices and procedures.
- Demonstrate applicable institutional knowledge and practices of the campuses and its operation.
- Be willing to work overtime and holidays, sometimes with little or no advance notice.
