The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation is looking for a strong leader for our Region 4 Trail crew based out of Moab, Utah. We desire a sound decision maker with the ability to safely and effectively lead personnel in accomplishing recreation trail maintenance across the state. This is a full-time position 40 hours a week with overtime only occasionally based on the needs of the Division of Outdoor Recreation, which occasionally requires irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. The ability to travel and stay in various areas of Utah.

Principal Duties:
As the Trail Crew Supervisor, you will have a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • Work with federal, state, and local agencies to accomplish winter and summer trail maintenance and construction.
  • Manage and supervise day-to-day operations of trail crew members in the field.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out safely and efficiently, prioritizing safety protocol
  • Serve as recruiting and hiring manager for all crew members, ensuring a skilled and motivated team.
  • Complete, authorize, and ensure the timeliness of site-specific safety plans
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and update the crew SOP manual annually.
  • Establish and communicate objectives, priorities, work assignments, and performance expectations with each crewmember.
  • Provide both classroom and field orientation training for crew members.
  • Perform logistical duties such as purchasing equipment, tools, fuel and safety gear.
  • Track all work time and ensure reimbursement for each crew member.
  • Perform, supervise, and coordinate equipment maintenance on all equipment.
  • Conduct After Action Reviews, crew performance evaluations, and project briefings to continuously improve team performance.
  • Allow for and provide training and career development opportunities for subordinates.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Leadership skills and experience particularly in an outdoor setting.
  • Familiarity with region specific trails and trail systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize work accordingly.
  • Experience in OHV’s/ATV’s including operations, trailering, and mechanical.
  • Knowledge of motorized trail maintenance and construction.
  • Basic knowledge of snow grooming operation and repair.
  • An understanding of chainsaw operations and safety.
  • Experience and or have ability to coordinate field work utilizing volunteer participation.

This job requires arduous labor that can be up to 16 hours in a given work day. Examples of labor are bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity include: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 50 pounds, must carry and roll rocks and logs; swamping logs and brush; use hammers to crush or shape rock; and use hand tools extensively. Frequent operation of OHVs up to 100 miles daily, and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools. Work may consist of multi day camping in remote locations working in all weather conditions.
