Recon Trail Design wants you to join our growing team!  We’re offering a unique new position for a Trail Planner & Training Coordinator.  Help us map and design various trail projects, and grow our educational offerings for hands-on Trail Skills Trainings.

This is a part-time, year-round position with opportunities for bonuses, additional hours, and long-term advancement. Qualified candidates will possess strong trail evaluation skills and effective outdoor teaching ability.  Responsibilities will be split between assisting with all aspects of trail planning and design, and managing and growing a training program at our base in Porter, ME.  Earn daily bonuses for booking and instructing new courses.  Option to work full-time during field season by joining our Professional Trail Crew.

Job Responsibilities

Trail Planning – 50%

Responsibilities include trail evaluation, GIS mapping & data collection, new trail survey & design, and producing maps and reports.  Candidates should possess the following: 

  • Demonstrated trail evaluation skills and ability to effectively assess maintenance needs
  • High level of skill navigating independently through various outdoor terrain
  • Experience using GIS software and mobile applications to collect and manage data
  • Knowledge of current trail building techniques, standards, and BMP’s

Training Coordination & Instruction – 50%

Responsibilities include training recruitment & scheduling, course instruction, curriculum development, and working directly with various partners and organizations.  Candidates should possess the following: 

  • Ability to advertise, market, and recruit new course bookings
  • Ability to coordinate and manage annual training schedule
  • Ability to teach Trail Skills Training courses with a focus on safety and high-quality instruction
  • Ability to travel to host sites throughout New England

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain high standards of quality and work outputs with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work outdoors in any weather conditions
  • Three or more seasons of trail work experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good physical fitness with ability to hike up to 15 miles and lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Experience backcountry camping, and ability to camp if required
  • Knowledge of and ability to uphold Leave No Trace standards and practices
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License and reliable transportation
  • Willingness and ability to travel, camp, and work some weekends
  • Commitment and ability to maintain a smoke and drug-free work environment

Desired Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree and/or relevant experience in natural science or conservation work
  • Valid outdoor medical certification, first-aid and CPR

HOW TO APPLY

Base Location:  Porter, Maine & Mountain Washington Valley, New Hampshire

Position Location: Remote 60%, In-Field 40%

Terms: Year-round, Part-time with flexible hours and start date

Time Requirements:  20 hours/week, (optional 40 hours/week during field season)

Compensation:  $19-22/hour DOE + daily bonuses for course instruction & year-end bonus
