Trails Technician

The Great Basin Institute (GBI) and the Nevada Conservation Corps (NCC) are seeking 3 trail technicians focusing on trail construction, maintenance, and management. Ideal candidates will have a background in Recreation Management, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, or similar fields. Located in Lassen National Forest, this role offers a unique opportunity for individuals eager to advance their careers in recreation and natural resource management, combining hands-on experience with environmental conservation and community engagement in a stunning natural setting. Qualifications:

Seeking candidates with relevant experience in outdoor recreation management, GIS, conservation, and trail construction. Ideal applicants are resourceful, adaptable, and capable of working effectively with diverse volunteers in various outdoor settings (backcountry and wilderness). Resume and cover letter should highlight specific project experiences in detail.

Required:

• Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
• Undergo a federal criminal background check is required
• Effective communication skills with people of diverse ages and backgrounds
• Must be able to communicate clearly and consistently with staff
• Experience with trail construction, design and rehabilitation with GBI, a Conservation Corps, or other trail building organization
• A high fitness level and an interest in camping overnight for backcountry work trips
• Ability to work alone/in a small group in remote settings
• Ability to work in large teams in remote settings (up to 15)
• Experience and/or ability to learn use of GPS unit
• Willing to work outdoors and be capable of lifting 40 lbs
• Able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts
• Applicants are expected to be highly motivated in natural resource and trail management and be willing and able to perform assigned duties with little direct supervision
• Be a US citizen

Preferred:

• First Aid or Wilderness First Aid certified
• USFS Chainsaw certified
• Experience with Griphoist winches and rigging for trail building
• Experience with stone work for trail building
• Database management and ArcGIS software experience
• Knowledge and understanding of Leave No Trace principles
• Knowledge and ability to utilize GPS equipment in the field
• Knowledge and ability to utilize GIS programs such as ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro
• Previous employment on a Field Crew for a Conservation Corps, Federal Agency, or other trail building organization

Location: Reno, NV Field Station

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The compensation rate is $21.00 hourly, includes housing, and a per diem allowance of $15.00 per field day.

The overall nature of the position is both sedentary and active, at times requiring little physical effort and occasional light exertion and at times requiring frequent physical effort and exertion. There is frequent exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and temperature changes while in the field.
