IOM’s mission in Afghanistan was established in 1992 and has maintained an uninterrupted presence in the country. IOM Afghanistan is one of the largest IOM missions worldwide, with over 740 personnel and offices covering every region of the country.
IOM currently implements a range of humanitarian assistance, community stabilization and migration management initiatives in Afghanistan, in cooperation with government and humanitarian partners as well as local communities.
The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) has joined forces with the UN system in Afghanistan to address development challenges and demand for skilled human resources by mobilizing qualified expatriates under the “Expatriate Volunteers for Afghanistan” (EVA). Under the EVA initiative, Online Volunteers will be supporting UN programmes and projects in Afghanistan in top priority areas such as health and education as well as a variety of other areas, i.e. migration, engineering, computer science, economics, environmental protection, food processing, water resources development, youth empowerment, and community engagement, etc.
To that end, IOM in Afghanistan is seeking to collaborate with qualified Online Volunteers through this volunteering assignment, specifically through translation of a community-based capacity-building manual on disaster management and response from Pashto and Dari to English. This task will contribute to our organization’s activities and goals of enhancing the resilience of communities affected by natural disasters and conflicts in Afghanistan by sharing our knowledge and experience with the female and male community members, and by updating our training materials based on best practices and feedback. The volunteers’ work will further help the IOM Afghanistan mission and the SDGs by empowering communities to cope with disaster crises.
We seek Online Volunteers to support us by translating a community-based capacity-building manual on disaster management and responses from Pashto and Dari into English. To this end, the Online Volunteers are asked:
– To translate the document, which is around 100 pages long, into English. The community-based capacity-building manuals support the facilitation of community-based disaster capacity-building knowledge through two-week training delivered to the community’s male and female members. It helps them understand the disaster risk in their area, early warning systems, search and rescue, and first aid, and guides them on using training tools that will be handed over to them after the training takes place through simulation. Translating this document into English will further support the ability to utilize this manual, develop it, and adapt it to different contexts.
– To translate a half-page official letter communication from English to Pashto and from Pashto to English.
– Ensure the translation is concise, in line with our communications guidelines, and fits the audience.
The selected Online Volunteers will be provided with the document in the original language and will receive guidance on the target audience and our communications guidelines, as well as other guidance as needed.
