Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Associate Field Translator, the Individual Contractor will undertake the following tasks: Proofread, revise, and edit documents subject to translation, and as requested by direct supervisor. Translate from Spanish to English and vice versa, subject to revision, a variety of texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, medical, and technical, meeting established workload and quality standards, while integrating a gender perspective, especially in relation to gender sensitive use of language. Ensure final versions of source documents and translations conform to existing UNVMC editorial guidelines. Use United Nations terminology and style consistently and accurately. Solve translation/editorial issues (i.e., clarification on ambiguities, technical meanings, etc.) in consultation with the Associate Field Translator. Observe the established terminology and usage and ensures consistency with other translators working on similar documents. Use all sources of reference, information, and consultation relevant to the text at hand and carries out any research required. Make effective use of relevant language technologies and tools. Maintain strict security and confidentiality of information. Register incoming/outgoing documents in order to control flow of work in and out of team. Maintain daily statistics. Performs administrative work, as needed. Perform daily maintenance of translation teamÂ’s network drives and logs. Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
A first-level university degree in humanities (translation, languages, literature, or related field with an emphasis on English and Spanish) is required. Further translation studies or certifications (sworn/certified translation certifications, Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools licenses/certifications) are highly desirable. A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in translation in the fields above-mentioned is required. Proven experience in the use of standard computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools is required. At least one year of experience proofreading and editing documents and revising translations or working in self-revision is required. Experience working within the United Nations or a similar international organization is desirable. Experience rendering certified/sworn translations is desirable.
