Mission and objectives
Al Mezan’s mission is to promote the respect and protection of human rights, particularly economic, social and cultural rights, in the Gaza Strip as part of the occupied Palestinian territory, through research, legal intervention, advocacy and awareness-raising. We carry out our work with a sound combination of professionalism and community participation. Our guiding principles include equal human worth and equal respect of all human rights, individual and collective, for all people as enshrined in international law and jurisprudence.
Context
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights is based in Gaza/Palestine. In general, our publications are a reflection of what is going on the ground. They voice concerns about Israel’s constant violations of Palestinian human rights and IHL in Gaza, particularly, and the occupied Palestinian territory in general. We demand an end to these violations, accountability for their perpetrators, and call for guarantees for ensuring the respect of Palestinians’ human rights. Over the course of more than four months, Al Mezan has been working jointly with other Palestinian human rights organizations on drafting materials from the ground. Given the huge extent of violations and the length of the aggression, more materials are being produced on various humanitarian issues. Accordingly, the translator has to be prepared to receive multiple tasks during the week and has to be aware of the ongoing Israeli violations in Gaza.
Task description
We are seeking to hire online volunteers to support us in our translation duties. The translation will be from Arabic into English and vice versa, and it should follow Al Mezan’s terminologies and style guide. Given the continued aggression of Israeli forces on Gaza, the materials, which include press releases, testimonies, and reports, are issued regularly and are between 5-6 pages long. The translator must first understand the context of the Gaza Strip and be updated with the current situation there. He/she/they also must be equipped with a good knowledge of basic principles of human rights and international law. The translator must ensure that the text is clear and free from any grammatical mistakes. After the completion of the task, the translator must submit his/her/their work to the supervisor to review it.
