Mission and objectives

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat Department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.

Context

OHCHR as part of its mandate, collects information from a number of information providers and Open Sources. Some of this information is in Sinhalese language (Sri Lanka). OHCHR is seeking assistance to translate a number of public documents written in Sinhalese to English. To that end, the Office is seeking to collaborate with Online Volunteers with professional background in translation and/or legal skills to support the translation of these publicly available documents, including legal document(s). Experience translating legal documents is an advantage.

Task description

The Online Volunteers would provide support to the mandate of OHCHR by translating publicly available documents from Sinhalese to English. To this end the Online Volunteers are tasked: – To translate and/or proofread the translation of Sinhalese documents, ranging from 20 to 120 pages into English and ensure that the translation is correct. The selected Online Volunteers will be provided with the documents in the original language and will receive guidance on confidentiality standards.
