OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Office for the Pacific States, and the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist for Culture, the contractor will carry out  translation of existing UNESCO animated videos “Bringing Living Heritage in the Classrooms in Asia-Pacific”  and of a new video module being developed in relation to Intangible Cultural Heritage and Disaster Risk Reduction.

These Seven episodes of videos (two minute per episode) are to be translated into one of the following three languages:

1) Fijian

2) Bislama

3) Tongan

In this regard, UNESCO is looking for three individual consultants to carryout the translation work in one of the three languages as follows:

  1. “Translate the audio from the video into subtitles. The spoken content to be translated is: ‘Episode 1, What is teaching with living Heritage in schools?'” Following the subtitling guidelines from the Lalicorn company.
  2. Translate the audio from the video into subtitles. The spoken content to be translated is: ‘Episode 2, Why is it important to teach with ICH?”. Following the subtitling guidelines from the Lalicorn company.
  3. Translate the audio from the video into subtitles. The spoken content to be translated is: “Episode 3, I’m a teacher. How can I integrate living heritage elements in my lessons?”. Following the subtitling guidelines from the Lalicorn company.
  4. Translate the audio from the video into subtitles. The spoken content to be translated is: “Episode 4, I’m a parent/a community member. How can I help our school organize teaching with living heritage?”. Following the subtitling guidelines from the Lalicorn company.
  5. Translate the audio from the video into subtitles. The spoken content to be translated is: “Episode 5, I’m a school manager. How can I help teachers organize teaching with living heritage?”. Following the subtitling guidelines from the Lalicorn company.

6. Translate the audio from the video into subtitles. The spoken content to be translated is: “Episode 6, I’m a student. What can I do to keep my heritage alive?”. Following the subtitling guidelines from the Lalicorn company.

7. Translate the audio from the video into subtitles. The spoken content to be translated is: “the newly developed video of a new module on “Basics in Disaster Risk Reduction and Intangible Cultural Heritage’ and ‘Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction into ICH Inventorying’.” Following the subtitling guidelines from the Lalicorn company.

8. Hold coordination calls to update UNESCO on work and address any challenges that might arise.

9. Submit the translated videos of Episode 1 – 3 within two days, Episode 4 – 6 and the newly developed video within five days time. All work must be completed within seven days and submitted to UNESCO for review and comment. 

10. Submit final version incorporating feedback from UNESCO.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

University degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent degree) in History, Linguistics or related fields of study 

Experience

At least four years of working experience in the relevant field

Experience in translation preferably in either Fijian, Bislama or Tongan languages

Skills and Competencies 

Good communication skills, attention to detail, organizational skills, technical skills.

Ability to recognize both literal and nuanced meanings in the source materials suitable to the local languages, culture and norms of the targeted audience 

Video lecturing technology and use of online video software

Previous work experience in the Pacific

Language

Excellent knowledge of English (Oral and Written)

Excellent knowledge of either Fijian, Bislama or Tongan (Oral and Written)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
