Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of project managers, the IC will carry out a range of activities for various projects. The IC will be expected to interpreter/ translate/edit and perform other requests related to the nature of the job opening, with linguistic and grammatical accuracy. The incumbent(s) will be responsible for following: Translation : – Accurate translation of all written materials in English and/or Azerbaijan, of the highest quality, submitted proof-read and copy edited. – Ensure use of correct spelling, following English language variations – The translators shall be required to translate in the “spirit” of professional English language, in addition to providing accurate translation. – The literal translation of sentences shall not be accepted -Ensure proofreading and editing of all text, including figures, boxes, captions, sources and covers – Perform terminology research and use the correct terms and names consistently throughout the translated text – – Ensure translated text is complete – Check and correctly quote references to documents already published; – Pay attention to detail at all levels and check for errors (e.g. grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, formatting) to ensure the translated text is an accurate, faithful and consistent rendering of the original text. TOR Interpretation: – Consecutive and/or simultaneous interpretation with concise, clear, and accurate interpretation in English and/or Azerbaijan without distortion and/or over-interpretation of original messages communicated by a speaker.
Qualifications/special skills
Bachelor’s degree is required. Education in philology is desirable. Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages is required. At least five years of experience in translating / interpreting is required. Knowledge of key UN concepts and standards on the above (vocabulary, terminology, and other) is desirable Experience in performing simultaneous and consecutive interpretation in formal setting (conferences, high-level meetings, trainings, etc.) is mandatory.
Languages
Fluency in English and Azerbaijan is required. SPECIAL NOTE: As per UN policy, Consultants and Individual Contractors may not apply for or be appointed to any position in the Professional or above categories and for positions at the FS-6 and FS-7 levels in the Field Service category within six months of the end of their current or most recent service. This restriction does not apply to associate experts (Junior Professional Officers) appointed under the Staff Rules.
