Translator/Senior Translator (Japanese) – CSFLSTC

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Chinese and Japanese Section in Language Services of the Corporate Services and Facilities (CSF) Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the candidate will provide accurate, timely and stylistically appropriate translations from English into Japanese, using word processing, spreadsheet, and other relevant software, including CAT tools. Specifically, the selected candidate will:

 

1.            Translate, mostly without revision, texts covering the full range of Fund documents and publications.

2.            Revise and/or review translations prepared by freelancers.

3.            Post-edit machine-generated translations to ensure they are accurate, fluent, and contextually appropriate.

4.            Identify and research points of terminology, language, and subject matter during assignments consulting with authors and other experts to clarify ambiguities.

5.            Contribute to updating and maintaining the terminology database and related reference material.

6.            Provide guidance and assistance to freelance translators on IMF-specific concepts, specialized terminology and house style and conventions for Japanese usage.

7.            Collaborate with Office of Asia and the Pacific (OAP) staff in finalizing translations and consults with authors and other experts within or outside the Fund to clarify meaning as required.

8.            Acts as authority in Fund translation/terminology in Japanese and manages the Japanese Translation Memory and Terminology Database.

9.            Perform other related duties, as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Experiences

In addition to the qualifications set forth in the job standards, the ideal candidate will possess the following:

 

A.        Academic qualifications

 

1.         Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in translation, linguistics, economics, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of four years of relevant work experience, is required.

 

B.        Languages

 

1.         Candidates must have Japanese as their native language and solid translation skills from English into Japanese, as well as from Japanese into English, with an excellent command of financial and economic concepts and terminology.

2.         Have considerable professional experience in translation into Japanese of economic and financial texts of a complex nature for governments, financial institutions and/or an international financial institution.

3.         Experience in revising the work of other translators.

4.         Experience in financial and economic terminology work is preferred.

 

C.        Professional experience and knowledge

 

Considerable professional experience (preferably four years) in translating economic and financial texts of a difficult and complex nature for a government, a large-scale private organization, or an international organization.

 

Reasonable experience in revising the work of other translators.

 

D.        Competencies

Professionalism: Advanced analytical, writing and translation skills. Proven ability to produce, within the established deadlines, translations and revisions that meet high standards of accuracy and consistency and retain the sense, style and register of the original text. Ability to deliver within the assigned deadline, while complying with quality standards. Technology: Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and other relevant software, including computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools. Continuous learning: Keep abreast of new developments in the translation field, e.g., CAT tools, translation memories, machine translation and related innovations. Planning and organizing: Ability to work efficiently under pressure. Ability to identify and reshuffle priorities and plan for timely delivery. Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a team. Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships in a multinational environment.

 

Shortlisted candidates will be required to take translation/revision test and will be invited to an interview.

 

This vacancy shall be filled by a 3-year Term appointment in accordance with the Fund’s new employment rules that took effect on May 1, 2015.
