 The U.S. Embassy in Brussels is looking for a Treasury Adviser to join the U.S. Treasury team at the U.S. Mission to the European Union.
 
Your responsibilities:
  • Serve as senior advisor to the US Treasury Representative to the EU, including substituting in his/her absence.
  • Analyze and evaluate EU legislation and regulations governing financial services and other economic areas, with a view to promoting a robust transatlantic financial regulatory and broader economic relationship, while protecting against financial stability risks.
  • Monitor and evaluate financial sector and macroeconomic developments in the EU and the euro area, with a view to identifying key trends and decisions.
  • Provide strategic assessments and advice on financial services, financial sector, and economic developments to senior officials at U.S. Treasury and other USG agencies, as well as to the Ambassador and other USEU senior staff.
  • Support other Treasury representatives traveling to Brussels and the region, as needed.
  • Incumbent maintains an extensive array of senior-level contacts. 
  • Gathers information about EU economic policy meetings, including European Council (heads of state/government), Council (ministerial), as well as Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) committee meetings at the European Parliament and other events in Brussels.
  • Monitors and reports on the activities of the Commission, the European Central Bank, the European Parliament, the EU Presidency, the EU Council, and the European Supervisory Authorities in the areas of financial services, macroeconomic, monetary, and competition policy, and other issues of interest to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

 

Strong written English skills are critical.  Incumbent provides analysis to senior Treasury and Mission officials on EU economic policy-making and financial markets. Incumbent writes regular and special analytical reports.
 
Regular reports include: (a) bi-weekly reports providing details on on-going legislative developments and decisions in the areas of EU economic and monetary policy, financial services, key economic indicators, and identifies key upcoming milestones. 
 
Special reports — usually self-initiated, but sometimes tasked — include: real-time updates of Council meetings or Leaders’ summits, and ad-hoc analytical summaries of relevant legislative developments. Such reporting requires independent contact work and research. The incumbent also collaborates with Mission officers on analysis and reporting.
 
Incumbent is the main point of contact to support visiting officials from the U.S. Treasury department and leads the preparation and execution of those visits. 
 
Your profile:
 
EDUCATION: Master’s degree in political economy, economics, public affairs, law, journalism, business, or related.
 
EXPERIENCE: 5 years of experience working at an EU institution or for an organization that deals regularly with EU economic, business or regulatory policy issues.
 
LANGUAGE: Fluency in English and good working knowledge in French/Dutch.
