Since 1981, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association has championed recreation in the Tahoe Basin. Today, the TRTA maintains and enhances a world-class 200-mile trail system with over half a million annual users. The organization implements a variety of programming to teach users sustainable trail use practices, connect the public with the outdoors to create lifelong stewards, and mitigate the impacts of trail users on the trail and landscape so everyone can enjoy the Tahoe Rim Trail today and in the future.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting Structure: This role reports to the Trail Operations Directions.
Location: Stateline, NV
Job Classification: Temporary Full-time, non-exempt
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Trail Crew Leader will train, motivate, and lead the Tahoe Rim Trail Association’s (TRTA) Trail Crew to complete trail building and maintenance projects. The Trail Crew Leader is responsible for implementing TRTA protocols, ensuring productive project hitches, coordinating with TRTA project leaders, and positively representing the TRTA in the field with the public. This is a temporary position scheduled from May 13th, 2024 through October 15th, 2024
Position Responsibilities:
- Establish a safe, productive, and inclusive working environment for the crew.
- Perform trail maintenance utilizing a variety of trail tools including hand tools such as McLeods, Pulaskis, shovels, crosscuts, chainsaws, griphoists, and drills.
- Ensure all trail work is safely completed to TRTA/US Forest Service standard, including tread construction, drainage structures, construction of steps, turns, bridges, and switchbacks, etc.
- Supervise and manage crew member dynamics including resolving conflicts, maintaining positive morale, providing constructive feedback, and demonstrating effective communication.
- Coordinate with the Trail Operations Director on project objectives.
- Manage project objectives in the field to ensure deadlines are met.
- Assess Trail Crew member skills and assign relevant work objectives.
- Maintain and track trail building tools, gear, vehicles, and equipment to ensure safe operations.
- Participate as a Crew Leader in volunteer workdays and camps, providing technical and managerial skills.
- Complete accurate and detailed documentation of timesheets, weekly project reports and statistics, crew member evaluations, tool/gear inventory, etc.
- Coordinate on the job trail skill trainings for crew members as needed.
- Provide photographs and videos of work in progress and completed.
- When necessary, serve as a point of contact with partner and agency staff on specific projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have at least one season of experience serving as a Crew Leader or Assistant Crew Leader of a professional, youth, or volunteer corps.
Additionally, qualified candidates will possess:
- Advanced knowledge and experience in trail construction with an emphasis on management of work sites and project objectives.
- A minimum of two years of relevant experience
- Current Wilderness First Aid (or higher) certification with CPR/AED, or receive certification before June 1, 2024
- Technical trail building and maintenance skills including proficiency with a variety of hand tools, Griphoist and rigging equipment, and dry stone masonry construction techniques
- USFS Chainsaw and/or Crosscut Operator certification
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain a positive camaraderie among the trail crew.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment often with minimal supervision to complete project goals.
- Experience with working in the backcountry and LNT skills.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- A current driver’s license and clean driving record with no major infractions.
- Ability to pass a full background check.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to hike and camp in the backcountry for up to several days at a time at various elevations carrying up to 55 lbs
- Ability to perform physical trail construction and maintenance tasks using a variety of trail tools, at times, in adverse conditions
- Ability to work in the field for up to ten hours daily
Schedule and Location:
The TRTA office is based in Stateline, NV. Work projects will start from the TRTA office unless other arrangements are made and approved by the Trail Operations Director. The TRTA Trail Crew will work 10-hour workdays. Many projects will require overnights in the field due to the remote nature of the work. In addition to being paid for hours worked at the project site, paid hours on overnight hitches will include travel time to and from worksites from the office/campsites each day. Time spent at camp on the crew member’s own time is not paid.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Hourly rate of $24.00-$28.00/hr depending on experience level.
- Paid holidays for all holidays observed by the TRTA during term of employment.
- Accrued sick leave at the rate of one-half day (4 hours ) per month.
- Field expenses compensated during overnight projects.
