Position description

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is looking for two full-time Tyranny Tracker Fellows. The fellowship will run for six months initially, with the possibility of extension.

About the Human Rights Foundation:

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes and protects human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies. HRF is one of the few international organizations that focuses exclusively on promoting human rights in authoritarian regimes.

Through our Political Regime or “Tyranny Tracker” research, we are able to focus our resources on more than 90 countries ruled by authoritarian regimes — countries whose regimes systematically deny their citizens meaningful electoral competition, basic political freedoms, and an independent judiciary willing and capable of checking the regime’s ability to repress basic democratic freedoms.

About the Position:

The Tyranny Tracker Fellow will support HRF’s Tyranny Tracker Research project that monitors and analyzes political repression globally. The research project is closely connected to HRF’s mission statement of promoting and protecting human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies.

The Tyranny Tracker Research project is a new research project that employs several full-time regional Research Fellows, and has developed a unique methodology to determine which countries globally are authoritarian using a checklist of indicators covering issues of electoral competition, freedom of dissent, and judicial independence.

The Tyranny Tracker Fellow will be asked to help with the day-to-day of managing the research project. Tasks can include anything from drafting internal research memos on outstanding methodological questions, to researching project-related questions, to project management related tasks such as setting out goals and managing deadlines.

Skills & Requirements:

  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills (strongly preferred)
  • Knowledge of political science, international relations or affairs, or international or comparative law (strongly preferred)
  • Knowledge of qualitative social science research methods and literature on authoritarianism and democratization (strongly preferred)
  • Passionate about research
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • Able to work well in a collaborative environment, as well as independently
  • Creative mindset
  • A strong affinity for HRF’s mission statement
  • Based in the United States (preferred), but highly qualified candidates from other regions will be considered

Time commitment: 40 hours/week

Stipend: $2500/month for full-time
