Duties and Responsibilities
This internship is located in Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work, as well as the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, and persons marginalized from society and development. The intern will work under the supervision of and report to the Social Affairs Officer in the Programme on Youth Unit (PYU) of the Social Inclusion and Participation Branch (SIPB). This internship is designed to be in-person and full-time (35 hours) but can be adjusted based on request by the successful candidate. The intern will contribute to research, communication, partnership coordination and the development of knowledge products on topics related to youth development and key issues in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Tasks may include, but are not limited to: • Conduct research and contribute to drafting written outputs, background papers, policy briefs, and analytical documents on youth development issues relevant to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY). • Assist with communication, correspondence, document preparation, and reporting related to the coordination of the 2025 ECOSOC Youth Forum. • Support the implementation and coordination of the Unit’s effort to enhance youth inclusion in intergovernmental processes (e.g., the UN Youth Delegate Programme), including engaging with stakeholders and compiling relevant documentation. • Assist in facilitating collaboration with the Inter-Agency Network on Youth Development, including drafting communications and supporting joint activities. • Assist in planning and implementing activities to raise awareness of relevant youth issues, including the preparation of International Youth Day. • Contribute to the development of materials such as reports, toolkits, and resources to communicate the Unit’s work to diverse stakeholders. This internship is designed to be full-time. Duties may be carried out in a hybrid manner (a combination of in-person presence and telecommuting from within the duty station at the UN Headquarters in New York). Telecommuting from outside the duty station may be considered on an exceptional basis. A part-time schedule may also be considered on an exceptional basis depending on the individual situation of the selected candidate.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). 1) Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. 2) Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
