The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to explore the world of biomedical research. Students undertake a project which is part of the research program of a research laboratory, are supervised by a scientist and work alongside other research staff and students in the team.
A wide variety of projects are available to UROP students including those in basic biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, bioengineering and bioinformatics. UROP projects differ each round and generally offers biomedical research positions in wet and dry labs (such as in the fields of computational science, engineering and mathematics, among others) and/or a combination of both.
UROP is open ONLY for Victorian undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in biomedical research and:
- are enrolled in STEM and other related degrees;
- have the ability to manage time commitments between work and study and maintain a high standard of academic performance; and
- have the ability to work alone and with others.
Location: Various host organisations in the Melbourne area (including Parkville and Clayton) and surrounds (not necessarily in CSIRO).
Stipend/Salary: Minimum $24.15/hour
Tenure: 6 to 12 months, tenure to begin at the start of student’s winter vacation, working a minimum of two weeks full time. Students are also required to work during semester 2 at least8 hours per week.

Eligibility:
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program is open to undergraduate students who are:
- Australian or New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or who have an existing visa with valid working rights for the duration of the term
- enrolled and placed at a Victorian tertiary institution
- enrolled in single degrees who have completed one full year of their undergraduate degree with at least two full semesters remaining at the time of application
- enrolled in double degrees who have completed two full years of their undergraduate degree with at least two full semesters remaining at the time of application; and
- available to start work during their winter vacation and continue working at least 8 hours per week during semester 2.
