Duties and Responsibilities

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015- 2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. The consultant will be home based, and work under the supervision of the UNDRR External relations Officer, UNDRR Regional Office for Africa Duties and Responsibilities: • Advises on the integration of gender equality, women’s empowerment, and disability inclusion into core UNDRR Regional Office for Africa processes, including integrating gender and disability into programme design and implementation. • Provide guidance to UNDRR grantees who are developing DRR training materials to ensure they are gender-responsive and disability inclusive. • Support the roll out of the disability and gender annex in MCR2030 and the gender and disability Inclusive early warning early action: checklist and implementation guide • Support Programme Management Officers to roll out trainings on the Gender Action Plan to support implementation of Sendai GAP.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree in international development studies, humanities, social sciences, gender, disability studies or related field is required. A first level university degree with a combination of 2 additional years of relevant academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. 10 years of progressively responsible programme management experience in gender mainstreaming, women’s leadership and/or inclusion in disaster risk reduction, humanitarian response, or development programming, is required. Experience working within the UN system or related international organization in the Africa region is desirable

Languages

English and French are the official UN languages. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
