UNEP FI is seeking a dynamic and skilled Publications Editor/Manager to play a pivotal role in the organization’s publications planning process, editing, messaging consistency, quality control, and production. The primary objective of this role is to centralize support for all publication-related activities, ensuring the production of high-quality publications that align with UNEP FI’s key messages and style guide. The Publications Manager will play a critical role in enhancing the quality of reports.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers and investors. For over 30 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI needs a consultant to assist with a centralized support for managing publications and providing desk-based writing /editing support. The role includes planning, sub-editing, and quality control, as our current team does not have the relevant professional expertise internally and capacity. Specific tasks and responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for various critical tasks related to the publications planning process, quality control, and production for UNEP FI’s publication work: Publication Planning and Coordination: • Establish structured publications process in line with UNEP requirements and UNEP FI needs. • Develop editorial good practice guidance and content templates/frameworks for different types of publications (guidance, progress reports, position papers etc). • Develop publications strategy. • Advise on planning for editorial support, sub-editing and proofreading to develop and implement quality controls and prioritization process. • Maintain a comprehensive publication schedule to support the timely release of reports. • Maintain a schedule for translations of publications and support on quality controls for translated reports. • Collaborate with relevant teams and stakeholders to identify publication needs and priorities and advise on good practice for publications editorial and management. • Identify opportunities for collaboration between teams • Coordinate with UNEP FI communications and design teams on content and planning. • Establish and maintain relationships with contributors. • Contribute to the development of UNEP FI’s publication strategy. • Identify opportunities to improve content development and delivery. • Provide analytics of publications uptake and recommendations for continuous improvement. Editorial Support and Quality Control • Edit, sub-edit and proofread content for key publications. • Ensure publications align with UNEP FI’s objectives and messaging. • Coordinate external writers/editors to support UNEP FI’s publications process. • Help ensure the accuracy, clarity, and consistency of content. • Advise on adapting content to effectively reach target audiences through various communication channels. • Implement rigorous quality control processes to maintain high standards for all publications. • Review content to ensure it meets professional standards. • Ensure compliance with UNEP FI style guidelines and publication templates. Content creation • For flagship publications such as Progress Reports, Annual Overviews and Leadership Council Summary Reports, undertake desk-based research and coordinate with subject matter experts to write content. • Provide report summaries/key messages for web pages and social media and develop recommendations to enhance downloads of online publications through visual or other features/optimize go-to market strategies with customer focus. Proofreading: • Conduct thorough proofreading to help ensure the accuracy of information presented in publications. • Ensure proper citation and referencing of sources. • Review and revise drafts to ensure consistency with UNEP FI’s messaging and style guides. • Work closely with authors to address feedback and suggestions. Team Collaboration & Continual Improvement: • Implement continual improvements in the publication process. • Manage the budget allocated for writing/editorial support for publications. Outputs and Deliverables: • Timely and organized publications that align with UNEP FI’s mission and objectives. • Quality publications that engage the target audience. • Effective management of the publication schedule and distribution processes. • Consistent compliance with UNEP FI’s branding and publication guidelines. • Publications process monitored and organized • Clear and effective communications materials produced. • Publication strategy The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of Head of UNEP FI and report directly to Programme Management Officer, working in close coordination with UNEP FI’s Communications team.
Qualifications/special skills
Education: A University degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, publishing, media, English, business, or a related discipline. Professional Experience: At least five (5) year’s working experience in publications, writing, editing communications, or a related field. This experience may involve working in roles such as a copywriter, content creator, editor, sub-editor or communications/publications specialist. Prior experience in managing or coordinating publications, including editing, proofreading, and overseeing the production of various materials. Experience of managing translations of publications desirable. Up-to-date proficiency with communications best practices, including digital communications particularly online publications desirable. Experience in using online content management systems (ideally WordPress) desirable.
Languages
Languages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
Additional Information
Skills & Knowledge: Excellent writing and editorial skills in English, strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with multiple teams; ability to cope with juggling multiple tasks across diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; attention to detail. Ability to manage and edit publications essential. The consultant should able to undertake desk-based research, create content, and provide editorial services, including editing, sub-editing proofreading skills. Ability to coordinate external parties to manage content development/editing and quality control. Knowledge of online production and promotion of publications desirable, as is experience of writing copy for websites and social media. The consultant is expected to support colleagues in implementing communications strategies and publications work plans. The consultant should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed team working across functions. A hands-on, pragmatic approach is desirable. Strong organizational skills are essential. Understanding of private sector and interest in sustainable finance desirable.
