Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo is seeking highly motivated applicants who wish to gain professional experience in the legal field within an international organization in order to supplement their knowledge, skills and studies. This full-time, inperson internship will provide practical experience in legal affairs in a multicultural intergovernmental organization. Under supervision, interns are assigned to projects and tasks which will provide them with opportunities to apply and further develop their knowledge of international law and obtain work experience in a peacekeeping setting. Responsibilities of internship positions range widely, encompassing many aspects of OLA’s work. These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: o Assistance in conducting legal research on issues related to international law, administrative law, private law or other areas of specialization using multiple research resources. o Assistance in the review of legal documents, instruments or other material. Assistance in drafting and preparing official and legal documents. o Attending and taking notes at conferences and meetings. Assistance in servicing conferences and meetings. o Perfonning other duties as assigned. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience to participate in the programme. Prior training, education, advanced course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during the internship

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, one of the following requirements must be met: (1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (2) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Be computer literate in standard software applications. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. The applicant’s training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during the internship.

Languages

Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other working languages of the UN Secretariat is desirable.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
