Organization Mission
UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work to translate that commitment into practical action, especially for the most disadvantaged children.
In the Pacific we work in Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu: These 14 Pacific island countries are home to 2.3 million people, including 1.2 million children and youth, living on more than 660 islands and atolls stretching across 17.2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean, an area comparable to the combined size of the United States of America and Canada.
Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu are classified as Fragile States according to World Bank/OECD criteria. All 14 Pacific island countries have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, but only a third are on track with reporting obligations.
Context
UNICEF Pacific and its partners are organising the PreCOP Australia and Pacific Youth Climate Dialogue (PreCOP APYCD). This October, around 60–80 young people aged 14–29 from across the Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond will gather in Nadi, Fiji for a three-day dialogue on climate change. The PreCOP APYCD aims to create a meaningful space for adolescents and youth to engage in climate change issues affecting their communities, share experiences and solutions, and contribute to regional and global climate action and discussions.
The event is happening just before the Pacific PreCOP31 meeting, which means the discussions and decisions here will feed directly into the conversations that world leaders will be having about the climate crisis. This dialogue is designed by and for young people, with participants’ ideas, experiences, and priorities shaping what governments and negotiators take into those formal meetings, all the way through to COP31 and COP32.
The PreCOP APYCD is organized by UNICEF, the Governments of Fiji and the Government of Australia in partnership with the Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change (PISFCC), the Pacific Islands Climate Action Network (PICAN) and the Pacific Youth Council (PYC) Additional partners include the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), the Pacific Community (SPC).
Key Responsibilities
The Online Volunteers will support with graphic design work for the event’s branding, and will be asked to contribute to the visual identity for the event, comprising:
• One primary logo (with horizontal and stacked variants, and versions suitable for both light and dark backgrounds
• A set of textures, patterns, and/or iconography that reflect Pacific identity and climate themes for usage in both online and offline communications materials such as social media posts, e-banners and merchandise
• Support in providing guidance on the colour palette and typography for use by the organising team in other materials.
The Online Volunteers will work with the UNICEF Pacific Climate Team and will receive a design brief, reference materials, and any existing brand assets at the start of the assignment. All collaboration will take place online, with files shared via OneDrive/Sharepoint. Feedback and revision requests will be communicated by email.
A short kick-off video call (approximately 30 minutes, via Zoom or Teams) will be held after selection of the assignment to align on the brief, agree on a working timeline, and clarify any questions. A second check-in call of similar length will take place at the midpoint of the assignment to review draft concepts and confirm the direction before refinement. The volunteer should be available for these two scheduled calls and should expect to exchange emails promptly. All calls will be scheduled to accommodate Pacific Standard Time (GMT+12).
• The volunteer will submit an initial concept presentation (mood board and 2–3 logo concepts), and final, print- and web-ready files — including all source files in editable format (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Figma, or equivalent) — by Deliverables must be submitted in agreed formats via Onedrive.
• 2 Online Volunteers are engaged under this DoA, and tasks will be distributed so that each volunteer has a clearly defined scope (e.g. one focusing on the logo and one on the iconography/texture set), with the focal point coordinating across both to ensure visual consistency. Volunteers may be asked to exchange feedback with one another at the midpoint check-in.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of an impactful event, and to increase your graphic design portfolio in a high-profile usage context.
