Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Background United Nations Environment Programme – Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a partnership between United Nations Environment and the global financial sector created in the wake of the 1992 Earth Summit with a mission to promote sustainable finance. More than 450 financial institutions, including banks, insurers, and investors, work with UN Environment to understand today’s environmental, social and governance challenges, why they matter to finance, and how to actively participate in addressing them. UNEP FI provides the secretariat for the industry-led, UN-convened Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA). The Alliance brings together over 140 banks from 44 countries with over US$74 trillion in assets, which are committed to aligning their lending and investment portfolios with net-zero emissions by 2050. Tasks This year, the NZBA is undertaking several large and exciting projects, including the celebration of its third anniversary, the publication of its progress report, supporting work in advance of COP29 and UNEP FI Global RoundTable and implementing its accountability mechanism on net-zero targets. The Alliance seeks a multi talented intern to support communications and data analysis surrounding these projects. From the communications side, this role will assist in social media content creation, event planning, and internal communications. From the data analysis side, this role will assist in net-zero target research and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data sets. Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the individual’s background as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: − Conduct research on members’ net-zero target submissions and analyze qualitative and quantitative data sets related to net-zero targets, financing the net-zero transition and GHG accounting. − Build data visualizations to help communicate findings from net-zero target analysis. − Support the team in the operationalization of the accountability mechanism, for e.g. by keeping track of members’ net-zero target submissions and sending reminders. − Assist with the communications workflow involved in onboarding new members. − Assist with the writing, editing, design, and publication of communications content, including social media, event announcements, web content, digital content and internal communications. − Assist with media monitoring. − Support on COP29 events, UNEP FI Global Roundtable and progress report publication. − Assist with day-to-day coordination of meetings, events and webinars. − Additional duties as needed, for example pursuing opportunities for synergies on intersectional issues across the wider banking or climate teams.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Undergraduate in communications, journalism, environmental studies, economics, business administration, finance, or environmental studies, ideally with some experience in data analysis. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
