Duties and Responsibilities
This vacancy announcement is for an internship position starting in May 2025 for a period of six months and is designed to be in-person and hybrid full time (40 hours) but can be adjusted based on request by the successful candidate. This internship is located in the UNODC Programme Officer in Lao PDR, Vientiane, Lao PDR. Under the supervision of the UNODC Programme Office in Lao PDR and in collaboration with the Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, the Communications and Development Coordination Intern will: (1) Serve as a focal point for coordinating communications with the inter-agency communications team in Lao PDR; (2) Support the UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific in creating visibility materials, such as web stories, press releases, social media posts, and reports, for thematic areas including Transnational Organized Crime, Criminal Justice, Anti-Corruption, Terrorism Prevention, Drugs and Health, and Alternative Development; (3) Support the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan to enhance the visibility of UNODC’s work in Lao PDR; (4) Draft and edit content for internal and external audiences, including newsletters, talking points, and presentations; (5) Monitor and compile news related to UNODC’s key thematic areas in Lao PDR for reporting and outreach purposes; (6) Conduct research on best practices for digital outreach and recommend strategies to enhance the effectiveness of UNODC’s communication efforts; and (7) Provide substantive, logistical and administrative support as appropriated for communications-related events, including participant coordination and documentation.

Qualifications/special skills
The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Preferred fields of study include Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Economics, Law, International Relations, Development studies, Political Science, Social Science or related disciplines.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
