Context

The 2024-2028 UNSDCF needs to be implemented in a manner that identifies, targets, and concretely delivers benefit to groups experiencing discrimination and vulnerability due to changing migration, cultural and economic patterns brought about by the triple planetary crisis, which is deepened by entrenched gender inequalities in the region, making women and girls a group whose right to empowerment must be supported. OHCHR is uniquely positioned to assist the UN Multi-Country Office and other UN agencies in Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Nauru, in all matters relating to civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, the right to development and the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, and the rights of groups in focus.
The Associate Human Rights Volunteer will be assigned to support PRO’s work related to the right to environment, climate change, gender equality and human rights, and other specific human rights issues relating to the Micronesian region. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to impactful human rights work and develop expertise in climate change, Small Island Developing States and development related human rights issues.

Task description

Under the supervision of the Pacific UN Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Representative and delegated supervision of the Human Rights Officer/Nuclear Legacy focal point, the UN Volunteer will be assigned to support the office’s work related to the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, climate change and gender equality. In particular, the UN Volunteer will be expected to:
1). Support the planning and organisation of activities related to women’s rights and gender equality and climate change and environment, in line with the PRO’s Annual work plan.
2) Conduct substantive research and analysis on the human rights situation in the Micronesian region.
3) Assists in developing and implementing capacity building initiatives and training programmes for national institutions, journalists and civil society organisations on human rights and countering discrimination at regional and country levels.
4) Supports the Human Rights Officer in the drafting of a variety of internal and external reports, communications, briefings, statements, including to policy making bodies;
5) Create educational and promotional activities to raise awareness on human rights in Micronesia; and
6) Develop and implement a communication strategy to increase external engagement on these issues, and among others, sharing of information of related activities on social media.
7) Performs other related duties as required.
