Result of Service
– Training package for the Arab Mayors Academy including training scenarios, flyers, learning paths for the participants; – Proposal for an event on the Arab Mayors Academy at the World Urban Forum; – Proposal for an event on the Quality-of-Life Initiative at the High-Level Political Forum, the Quality-of-life global conference and the World Urban Forum; – Technical Paper on the urban trends and impact on quality of life in collaboration with United Nations regional commissions; and – Presentation on the results of the technical paper on quality of life.

Duties and Responsibilities
The consultant will be supporting UNESCWA’s efforts in urban development including: 1. Contribute to strengthening the capacity of local governments in the Arab region on issues relating to local development through coordinating the implementation of the first iteration of the Arab Mayors Academy ( joint UNESCWA and UN-Habitat Initiative) o Asist in creating the training programme of the Academy; o Act as a trainer in the two planned in person training events for the academy and provide webinars under the umbrella of the Academy as needed; o Coordinate the online components of the Academy’s curriculum and follow-up on the progress of the participants; and o Follow-up on the created community of practice and manage the discussion. 2. Support the implementation of the Quality of Life in Cities Global Initiative in collaboration with UNHabitat and all United Nations regional commissions o Design and draft a technical paper on the Quality of life in cities Global initiative in coordination with United Nations regional commissions capturing the trends and quality of life and hold the necessary interviews to capture the regional specificities of QoL in the different regions; o Review the paper after editing; o Create a detailed presentation summarizing the outcome of the paper; and o Support the implementation of the Youth Art Competition on Quality of life in the Arab region. 3 Contribute to organizing events in global venues exposing the work on the Mayors Academy and the Quality-of-life initiative such the High Level Political Forum, the global event on QoL and the World Urban Forum, among others. 4. Undertake other related duties as needed.
Qualifications/special skills
A Masters degree in urban development / planning is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. 5 years of experience in urban planning/development is required Experience in providing training workshops and/or seminars and/or teaching is required. Experience in developing urban policies is required.
Languages
Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required. Fluency in Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
