Position description

The Communications Analyst will serve as a key member of the Legislative Affairs (LEG) Team focusing on Congressional Engagement, located in the USAID Bureau for Legislative and Public Affairs. Within the Legislative Affairs Team, the Communications Analyst is responsible for ensuring that Congress receives high quality, comprehensive materials that advance USAID legislative or strategic priorities.

This role is a full-time position working on-site within the USAID offices in Washington, DC.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Write, edit, and finalize high-visibility stories and factsheets that explain the work of the USAID and highlight the accomplishments of our workforce around the world – materials to include briefings, PowerPoint presentations, quarterly newsletters, and informational documents.
  • Write, copy-edit, and finalize general and technical materials, including strategic plans and metrics reports, internal/external communication products, internal handbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), backgrounders, brochures, and pamphlets.
  • Write stories and narratives that make complicated technical work comprehensible and compelling.
  • Assist other Agency bureaus and personnel with writing and editing of internal communications products, including but not limited to talking points, building blocks, and event scripts.
  • Ensure that USAID internal strategic goals, objectives, mission, vision, and values are communicated to internal audiences through information products.
  • Apply principles, practices, methods, and techniques of English composition to restructure, revise, and rewrite material for better understanding by target audiences.
  • Compose and edit written products that articulate, interpret, and explain highly complex, and important policies, programs, and positions.
  • Ensure that all written materials are clear, concise, and accurate by using thorough knowledge in the style requirements of the Agency (primarily based on AP Style and Usage guidelines).
  • Produce finished products in various formats using a wide range of systems applications, software programs, and technical programs, including Microsoft, Adobe, Google Workspace, and GovDelivery application platforms.
  • Work in collaboration with graphic designers and other team members to provide written material for collaborative communication products.
  • Draft content appropriate for products sent out over multiple content channels.
  • Manage the listservs for Congressional contacts using CQ Knowlegis.
  • Plan and implement training for USAID staff on best practices for engaging Congress.
  • Plan and implement training for Congressional staff on understanding USAID.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain a Facility Access Clearance
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Six (6) years of professional experience in strategic communications
  • Experience in conception, layout and production of communications products using professional level tools such as InDesign and GovDelivery
  • Experience with congressional relations
  • Strong strategic communications skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally
  • Expert knowledge of grammar, writing, editing, and writing techniques across a broad range of written product types and for different audiences and purposes
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
