About United States Committe for Refugees and Immigrants

The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), established in 1911, is a nongovernmental, not-for-profit international organization dedicated to addressing the needs and rights of refugees and immigrants. USCRI, working with its affiliates, provides legal services, social, and health services to refugees, unaccompanied migrating children, trafficking survivors, and other immigrants in United States, El Salvador, Honduras, Kenya, and Mexico. USCRI advocates for the rights of refugees and immigrants both nationally and globally, helping to drive policies, practices and law.

USCRI Mexico was established in 2021, and in 2024, additional programs were added to support the creation of complementary educational pathways for refugees in Mexico. This goal is supported by the simultaneous creation of safe, inclusive, and intercultural welcoming communities and the advocacy for the rights of migrants and asylum

Recently, the USCRI Mexico office located in Aguascalientes became the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, overseeing and promoting USCRI program operations in El Salvador and Honduras.

About the internship program

USCRI Mexico internship program seeks for people who have different profiles to support the team in different areas of the organization. The applicants will be matched to an area or program based on their motivations, interests, previous experiences, academic background and skills.

Work experience: Previous experience in work, internships or volunteering in the humanitarian sector, with NGOs, or in areas related to human rights, vulnerable populations or migration is desirable.

Academic Background

  • Bachelor’s degree or currently a student in International Relations, Political Science, Communication, Social Work or related studies.
  • Master’s degree is desirable.

Language: Proficient in English and Spanish, or good command of oral, written and reading comprehension skills in either one of the two languages or both.

Computer skills: Excellent domain of Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides).

Evaluations: The positions are subjected to mid-term performance review.

Internship period: January to June 2025 (6 months).

Areas and responsibilities

The responsibilities will be related to the specific area of the internship, the following is a brief description of the intern’s role in each area.

  • Regional Direction Intern: The Regional Direction area drives the organization toward achieving its objectives and sustainable growth by implementing a strategic approach tailored to regional needs. As a regional office of USCRI in Mexico, the main goal is to expand the organizations impact and establish a strong presence across the region. The primary mission of the intern in the Regional Direction area is to provide comprehensive administrative and strategic support to the Compliance Officer in Latin America and to the Regional Director, contributing to the smooth operation and advancement of USCRI’s objectives in the region.
  • Programs Management: It is the area that manages efforts with the programs coordinators following up on the specific, technical, programmatic and team needs to ensure the successful implementation of USCRI Mexico programs aligning with the regional strategy. The primary mission of the intern in the Programs Coordination area is to support the program coordinator by assisting in tasks that enhance the successful implementation of the programs.
  • Strategic Development and Engagement: The Strategic Development and Engagement area (SDE) aims to ensure the sustainability of the organization through institutional and individual fundraising, maintaining and strengthening existing partnerships with donors, analyzing the impact of the organization activities, and other actions that define and align with the broader organizational strategy. The primary mission of the intern in the SDE area is to support by following and implementing the organization’s action strategy, supporting fund application processes, monitoring and evaluating activities for each area, internal-donor and annual reporting.
  • Communication: The Communication area is responsible for developing and applying institutional identity by creating audiovisual products within the organization and addressing the communication needs of all other programs and areas. Additionally, the Communication area deploys the Habesha Media program, which serves as a creative agency. As such, Habesha Media designs and develops high-quality, audiovisual products, such as animation, web, editorial, and graphic design services for like-minded institutions and organizations in the fields of education and human rights. The primary mission of the intern in the Communications area is to support the area in following, implementing and expanding communication strategy, supporting community management and social media content creation, helping with various logistics and administrative tasks and enhancing the area with a new set of skills, ideas and a fresh perspective.
  • Welcoming Communities: The Welcoming Communities Program of the USCRI Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (USCR LAC) aims to become the central advocacy unit of the office, playing a crucial role in the advocacy and promotion of policies that favor the integration and protection of refugees, immigrants and returnees in the region, according to the root causes at the core of the programs that are being implemented in Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras. The intern in this area supports the implementation of the three projects of the program through the creation of various tools and documents; updates the radar of partners and stakeholders; Also, he/she/they carry out research on topics related to forced displacement, migration, and international protection in the context of the LAC region.
