The University of Virginia’s College at Wise invite applicants for a full-time User Experience & Facilities Services (UX&FS) Liaison Librarian that focuses on integrating user needs and experiences in all aspects of the UVA Wise Library’s current and future virtual and in-person public services and facility spaces. The position supports the academic initiatives of the College’s faculty, students, staff, researchers and community patrons by managing all aspects of user experiences, public services and learning space functions. The nature of the work is both routine and non-routine, and requires the ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.  The UX&FS Liaison Librarian performs general to complex tasks associated with day-to-day service support, FWS student supervision and mentoring, patron functions and facility/environmental operations. As a member of the UVA Wise Library’s Senior Leadership Team, the position maintains knowledge and functionality of campus, Library and IT core operations, policies, services and functions at an appropriate level.  Specifically, the UX&FS Liaison Librarian provides direct public service for all access services to all patrons including but not limited to circulation, reserves, research support and collection maintenance as well as supports and actively participants in the Library’s reference/research and information literacy instructional services.  Works collaboratively and cooperatively with all library personnel in assessment, development, and revision of policies, space configuration/usage and allocation, workflows and procedures. Serves as the liaison librarian to the campus.

Requirements:

  • Broad knowledge of Library services and automated Library systems with an understanding of an academic library organization and its procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with online information systems, word processing, spreadsheet, telephone, and other equipment. Academic experience preferred.
  • Experience assessing and responding to routine, non-routine and moderately complex patron, technology or facility needs, situations and issues independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Experience interpreting, explaining and applying a variety of policies and procedures independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of leadership and team building to assess situations, resolve problems and make reasonable judgments associated with motivating, counseling, supervising and terminating student workers.  Academic experience preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of various access services (including, but not limited to: circulation, inventory, data collection, document fulfillment, and reserves functions).  Academic experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with IT systems as well as printing and networked applications/systems.  Experience troubleshooting preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong customer service / public relations skills; demonstrated success in working with public.
  • Supervisory skills; Academic library supervision experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated technology skills including Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel as well as service-based technology including printing, photocopier, and inventory.
  • Problem-solving skills, initiative, follow-through, attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Organize and manage multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.

Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all professional matters.
  • Ability to work independently, identify and modify work priorities as needed or directed.
  • Ability to apply broad knowledge of library functions and understanding to train, supervise, evaluate and mentor.  Specifically, train, supervise, evaluate and mentor student worker personnel.
  • Ability to work collegially and courteously with multicultural populations and varying educational levels.  Demonstrable interpersonal communication skills preferred.
  • Ability to oversee library operations, facility and technology independently during scheduled work periods.
  • Troubleshooting skills including technical and facility.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, effectively and efficiently in a changing environment.
  • Ability to make professional judgments in daily situations.
  • Creativity; motivation. Take initiative and propose solutions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Planning, time management and follow through.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift materials and push loaded book trucks.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent library experience.
  • M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. in Library Science or Library Information Science or related field with commensurate experience.  
  • Two years of library experience required, preferably in an academic setting.  
  • Broad knowledge of hiring, training, supervising, evaluating and mentoring FWS &/or wages personnel, preferably student worker assistants in an academic setting.  
  • Teaching or instruction experience preferred.
