PRKN’s mission is to protect the public’s right to clean water in the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and their tributaries. We stop pollution to safeguard drinking water, protect river habitats, and ensure that everyone can enjoy these vital natural resources.

Position Summary
The Virginia Campaign Coordinator will play a critical role in advancing PRKN’s key advocacy campaigns in Virginia by leading strategic communications, deepening community engagement, and developing compelling campaign materials. This position will also represent PRKN in public forums, support regulatory advocacy, and engage with policymakers to advance clean water protections.

Key Responsibilities

Campaign Communications:

  • Develop and implement campaign-specific communication strategies, including social media, email, press releases, fact sheets, and op-eds.
  • Create engaging multimedia content (videos, graphics, stories) to highlight campaign goals and community impacts.
  • Maintain regular communication with supporters and partners to keep them informed and mobilized.

Community Engagement & Outreach:

  • Organize and attend community meetings, listening sessions, and other public events in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Northern Virginia, Northern Neck, and the city of Richmond
  • Build and maintain relationships with local leaders, community groups, and partner organizations, focusing on areas impacted by water pollution, coal ash, and PFAS contamination.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteers and grassroots advocates to take action.

Public Speaking:

  • Represent PRKN at public meetings, community events, hearings, conferences, and other speaking engagements.
  • Deliver presentations to diverse audiences, including community members, local officials, and partner organizations, to raise awareness and build support for our clean water campaigns.

Regulatory & Legislative Engagement:

  • Support regulatory processes by preparing and submitting public comments, analyzing proposed rules, and coordinating responses with coalition partners.
  • Assist in coordinating legislative advocacy efforts by preparing testimony for colleagues and supporters,organizing lobby days, and tracking bills relevant to PRKN’s campaigns.
  • Develop relationships with state and local elected officials, state agency staff, and other decision-makers to advance PRKN’s policy goals.

Campaign Materials Development:

  • Help draft and design campaign toolkits, advocacy guides, fact sheets, educational materials, and presentations tailored to target audiences.
  • Coordinate with legal and communications colleagues to ensure all materials reflect PRKN’s mission, messaging, and branding.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, environmental studies, public policy, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in advocacy, community organizing, communications, or campaign work.
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, including experience with public speaking.
  • Experience participating in state regulatory and legislative policymaking processes and public interest advocacy..
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with diverse communities and work respectfully across cultures.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and to maintain communication and coordinate effectively within a team of program, communications, and executive staff. A positive, can-do attitude is greatly appreciated.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly across Virginia.
  • Passion for the mission protecting the public’s right to clean water

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Virginia environmental issues, particularly water pollution, coal ash, PFAS contamination and agricultural challenges.
  • Graphic design and/or video editing skills.
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities.
