The District is seeking seasonal staff to assist in mosquito and vector surveillance, control, and other support roles as part of the Clark County Mosquito Control District.  Our District is based in Vancouver, WA and serves all of Clark County.

Job Description

Seasonal Vector Control Field Technician (up to 4 positions). Some positions will be mainly field work oriented (mosquito control) while others will be mainly assigned to our mosquito surveillance program (trapping). These positions will be based at the District facility in Vancouver, WA; however, work areas may change depending on need and be anywhere in Clark County.  Experience in biological laboratory and/or field-work desirable.  Basic computer skills required. 

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Field Work

  • Handle, observe, and inspect immature and adult mosquitoes
  • Application of mosquito control products
  • Collect surveillance data on immature mosquitoes and beneficial organisms that occur in flooded fields, catch basins or other similar habitats
  • Using laptop/handheld computer devices to collect field information
  • Help collecting data for research projects

Surveillance

  • Identifying immature and adult mosquitoes using a microscope
  • Trapping and collecting adult mosquitoes
  • Using laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Using laptop/handheld computer devices to collect field information

General

  • Safely operating a District vehicle to perform work-related activities
  • Communicating District messages to the public
  • Correctly utilizing personal protective equipment
  • Accurately interpreting paper and electronic maps
  • Performing general maintenance activity (cleaning laboratory workspace and equipment, District vehicles, etc.)
  • Oher specific job duties could be assigned to fit the needs of the District.

Requirements – Qualifications

It is the applicants’ responsibility to identify in their application materials how they meet the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS listed below:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Education, training, and/or experience in vector control is preferred, but not required
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the Public Health Pest Control License within one (1) month of employment and maintain it in good standing.
  • A valid Washington Driver License will be required at the time of employment and must be maintained throughout employment
  • Must have a driving record that meets the requirements of the District’s insurance carrier
  • A recent DMV printout is required before employment
  • Ability to learn and understand the duties and responsibilities of the Clark County Mosquito Control District

Physical requirements

  • Moderate physical activity is required on a regular basis including lifting, reaching for, pulling, and carrying up to fifty (50) pounds
  • Sitting for long periods of time while driving a vehicle
  • Walking for long distances and climbing over and around natural obstacles
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to type, and grip and operate a variety of hand tools and other equipment
  • Excellent vision, both close and distance
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Possess ability to climb ladders and fences
  • Possess ability to wear a respirator

Work environment

  • The work environment varies but normally is outdoors or in a vehicle but may include warehouses, office buildings, vehicles, wetlands, fields, etc.
  • Regular exposure to all types of weather is required as the position is required to work outside, exposed to high temperatures and humidity, sun, rain, and wind.
  • Exposure to loud and moderate noise levels will occur on a regular basis when around a variety of other equipment, motors, etc.
  • Working with and around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used, and disposed of according to labeling instructions, is required frequently.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, mud, fuel, fumes, and insects is required.
  • Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Pre-employment requirements

A pre-employment background check (including references and employment history) will be required.  Clark County Mosquito Control District is also committed to maintaining a drug and alcohol-free workplace.

Examination and selection process

  • Applicants selected for interviews will be based on a qualifying evaluation of training, education, and experience. Those candidates selected for interviews will receive an oral interview to assess training, experience, and ability to perform the duties of the position. Selection will be based on a combined overall assessment of the oral interview and the resume.

Terms of Employment

  • $19.57/ hour (non-certified technician), $21.75/ hour (certified technician)
  • Generally early April through the end of September; however, the specific timing will be dictated by environmental conditions and the needs of the District. For students, generally June to August depending on their availability (end and beginning of semesters)
  • Workdays/ hours: Generally, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; may include weekends or evenings and be adjusted for weather, virus activity, or other District needs
