JOB DESCRIPTION

Aid Gate Organization (AGO) is seeking a committed and knowledgeable Veterinarian to support a comprehensive livestock and agricultural project in Al Lamyia, Maysan Governorate. The project includes the distribution of goats and cows to vulnerable households, along with technical support and training to ensure livestock health, productivity, and sustainability. The Veterinarian will be responsible for overseeing animal health interventions, conducting veterinary checks, supporting beneficiaries with animal care, and facilitating training sessions on livestock management and disease prevention. This role is essential to ensuring the long-term success and impact of the livestock component of the project.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct pre-distribution health assessments of goats and cows to ensure only healthy animals are selected for beneficiaries.
  • Oversee and monitor the health of distributed animals through regular field visits and follow-up support.
  • Provide technical guidance and practical training to beneficiaries on livestock care, feeding, breeding, hygiene, and shelter.
  • Support the identification and treatment of common livestock diseases and develop plans for disease prevention and control.
  • Assist in designing and delivering animal husbandry training materials and manuals suitable for local contexts.
  • Establish vaccination plans and coordinate veterinary services in collaboration with local authorities and animal health centers.
  • Maintain accurate health records for distributed animals and document cases of illness, treatment, and recovery.
  • Collaborate with the Agriculture Engineer to ensure integrated support between livestock and fodder/feed availability.
  • Participate in beneficiary selection processes by conducting home visits to assess suitability for livestock ownership.
  • Support the development of beneficiary livestock management plans to promote sustainable and responsible care.
  • Ensure animal welfare standards are met throughout the distribution and follow-up phases.
  • Coordinate with local veterinary departments and stakeholders to strengthen referral and support networks.
  • Prepare regular progress reports on animal health, challenges faced, and success stories.

 

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

COMPETENCIES

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in veterinary medicine or animal Health.
  • Minimum 4–5 years of practical experience in veterinary services, preferably in rural or humanitarian settings.
  • Strong knowledge of small livestock (goats and cows) management and rural veterinary practices.
  • Experience in animal vaccination, disease control, nutrition, and breeding programs.
  • Skilled in conducting training for farmers and livestock owners using clear, culturally appropriate methods.
  • Familiarity with livestock health documentation, field diagnostics, and veterinary reporting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in working with rural communities.
  • Fluency in Arabic is required; English proficiency is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel extensively to field sites and provide hands-on support in remote locations.

  • Capacity to identify early signs of illness and apply appropriate veterinary treatment or referral.

  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, especially in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Commitment to humane animal treatment and ethical veterinary practices.
  • Ability to contribute to monitoring, evaluation, and learning processes related to livestock health outcomes.
