POSITION IS LOCATED AT THE UT MARINE SCIENCE INSTITUTE IN PORT ARANSAS, TEXAS.

Position is expected to renew annually. Only individuals authorized to work in the United States will be considered.

This position will work 3 days a week.

Purpose

The Amos Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) is a program ran under the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (MAR) at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute (MSI). The ARK seeks a qualified and experienced individual to lead and oversee the animal care of the ARK. The Veterinarian will play a critical role in overseeing all aspects of animal medical and rehabilitation care and animal health management for the ARK

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead in the design and execution of the animal medical care for rescue patients and resident individuals at the ARK. Including :
  • Performing physical examinations, surgeries, diagnostic procedures (including radiology), and medical treatments
  • Communicating with animal care staff regarding treatment options, prognoses, and follow-up care
  • Administer and monitor animals under sedation and general anesthesia
  • Performing euthanasia procedures when deemed necessary
  • Assisting with daily husbandry
• Work effectively with animal care staff to develop protocols involving animal diets, husbandry, enrichment, quarantine, and preventative medial practices
• Maintain updated medical records using digital recordkeeping software (RaptorMed)
• Perform necropsies and assist in the preparation of samples of port-mortem patients; collate results over time and make medical recommendations based on trends
• Ensure that veterinary care is compliant with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as within USDA guidelines
• Provide basic medical, nutritional, and zoonotic training for animal care staff as needed
• Develop an internship program, including veterinarian internship opportunities
• Program administration includes :
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures in veterinary care and wildlife rehabilitation areas
  • Contributing to development and implementation of program goals
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine
• At least 2 years related experience and/or training in non-domestic animal medicine
• One year documented clinical experience working with sea turtles or obtain a written consulting agreement with an experienced sea turtle veterinarian, assuring availability for consultation when needed.
• Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License with insurable driving record, or able to obtain within 30 days of employment.
• Valid State of Texas Veterinary License, or able to obtain within 30 days of employment.
• Texas Department of Public Safety and Drug Enforcement Agency Licensure, or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
• National Veterinary Accreditation from USDA-APHIS (Category II), or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds and working in various weather conditions.
• Computer literacy including the use of Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience capturing and caring for wild animals that are injured or orphaned, especially coastal birds and sea turtles
• Knowledge of wildlife native to the south Texas region and their habitats
• Experience using surgical and therapeutic lasers
• Familiarity with ultrasound and endoscopy
• Familiarity with oiled wildlife procedures and possession of at least a 24-hour HAZWOPER certification, or the willingness to obtain
• Excellent communication and public speaking skills, with the ability to engage diverse partners and communities
• Knowledge of state and federal permit requirements for wildlife rehabilitation, as well as familiarity with IWRC (International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council) and NWRA (National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association) minimum standard

Driving Required

This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant must provided a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, A Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

Prorated annual amount $70,000

Working Conditions

• This position will usually work from 9am-6pm, but could require additional duties outside of this time including evening, weekends, and holidays
• May work in all weather conditions including extreme temperatures, sun, rain, snow, and wind
• May work around chemicals, fumes, biohazards, electrical hazards, and mechanical hazards
• May work around standard office conditions including repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.

• Work with injured wildlife, including those affected by oil spills, which could include the risks of bites, scratches, and exposure to zoonotic diseases
