Description of Work Unit | Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDL) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratory system provides timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Diagnostic Lab strives to meet the goals of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biological Sciences (CVMBS) and the University through research and diagnostics to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate and post-doctoral students. The Rocky Ford Branch Laboratory is heavily involved in agricultural activities and works closely with livestock producers along with their local veterinarians in the management, care, and prevention of diseases in livestock. In addition, the laboratory serves companion animal owners and other animal services such as Parks and Wildlife, law enforcement, and Animal Control in disease investigation and diagnosis. The laboratory and its staff play an integral role in ensuring the safety of food production, the rapid and accurate diagnosis of zoonotic disease, and the interface of human and animal health. |

Position Summary | This position will provide laboratory technical, administrative, and customer services to the Rocky Ford Branch Laboratory. This position will assist with a variety of diagnostic testing, including serology, molecular diagnostics, parasitology, and necropsy. In addition, this position will include customer service and administrative duties, client communication, case entry, client invoicing, sample receiving and shipping. The position will also assist the veterinary diagnostician with post-mortem examination, carcass disposal, and necropsy lab cleaning. The applicant should be responsible and able to work in a team environment. This is a temporary, 20-40 hour per week position, to be worked Monday-Friday |
Position Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, or related scientific field. Effective English oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in use of computer technology and basic Microsoft Office applications. |
Preferred Qualifications | Laboratory experience in veterinary, medical, or biological field. Experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). One-year experience with customer service, general clerical/administrative duties, and maintenance of a clean, organized workspace. The applicant should be responsible, ethical, and able to work in a team environment. |

Specific duties include, but are not limited to: ·Answer phones, greet clients. Assist clients in appropriate test selection and sample submission according to established testing schedules. ·Receive samples, assign data into appropriate computer database. Route samples to appropriate testing section in laboratory. ·Prepare and package samples for shipment to referral laboratories. ·Ensure accurate invoicing and results reporting of completed tests and services. ·Participate in team meetings and organizational tasks to improve workflow and customer service. ·Assist in community, client and producer outreach and educational activities. |

Duty/Responsibility | The applicant will perform daily operations in the laboratory. This will include tasks such as preparation of reagents and control stocks, maintenance of laboratory inventory, routine equipment preventive maintenance and performing daily diagnostic tests. Diagnostic testing will be performed under the supervision of the Laboratory Director and/or laboratory technician positions. The applicant will be expected to pass proficiency tests, under supervision. The applicant will perform all quality control tasks associated with each test and will follow laboratory standard operating procedures. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: ·Review accessions, prepare/handle diagnostic samples and set up samples for testing. ·Conduct diagnostic tests, under supervision, including, but not limited to ELISA, PCR, and fecal flotation. ·Report test results and distribute client reports. ·Maintain diagnostic equipment and prepare reagents. -Maintain temperature and reagent logs as part of quality control. -Autoclave supplies, media, reagents, trash, and biological waste. ·Maintain QC documentation and ensure quality control procedures are met. -Perform monthly eye wash, shower, and autoclave performance checks, and equipment calibrations according to established schedule. ·Utilize the laboratory LIMS system and maintain records as directed by lead lab technician and director. -Maintain clean building and laboratory workspaces to ensure effective workflow and appropriate biosafety. |
