What we want
The Veterinary Technician I, under supervision, assists in the treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under the supervision of a professional staff member or Veterinary Technician II or higher. Provides assistance to the professional staff and helps to maintain a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or “on-call duty”.
Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty
unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.
Required Education and Experience:
-
Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-
Basic computer skills, general understanding or equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching
-
hospital.
-
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
-
Ability to provide quality service to internal and external customers.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Associates degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent
-
One year experience in a Veterinary Medical setting
-
Equine handling experience
-
Certification/licensure as a Registered Veterinary Technician
-
Experience with lameness exams, horse handling, and Anesthesia Induction and Recovery in the
-
Equine Patient.
Responsibilities:
-
Patient Care: Performs cleaning of instruments and equipment, packaging and sterilization of instruments and equipment. Provides quality control of instruments used within the hospital. Performs proper handling and care of surgical instruments, equipment, and packs. Stocks surgical supplies for each case. Follows proper infection control protocol. Provides technical support for surgical, and medical procedures. Assists with sterile procedures. Assists with recovery of anesthetized surgical patients. Performs patient positioning and surgical site preparation as well as circulating the operating room during surgical procedures.

General Technical Duties: Performs aseptic technique, manages and provides support for surgical procedures, and follows all SOP guidelines of the Operating Room and Central Sterile Supply. Operates steam autoclaves and plasma machines as well as other machines used in a surgical field.

Teaching: Instructs, guides, and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. May assist in various continuing education seminars or skill labs.

General Duties: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Performs recording keeping. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs and solutions.

Training and Certification: Remains current with various requires TAMU and department specific training courses. Maintains current rabies prophylaxis. Maintains certification or licensure where appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned
