What we want
The Veterinary Technician I position is responsible for providing support to the Large Animal Intensive Care Unit of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. This position facilitates faculty instruction of professional curriculum to veterinary medical students with an emphasis on clinical techniques, performs and instructs students with proper patient care and restraint, and maintains a clean and well-organized work area.

Required Education:

Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area. Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Basic computing skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and billing entry. General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary teaching hospital.
Preferred Experience:
-
One year experience in a veterinary medical setting. One year experience within the Texas A&M University System.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
-
Certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
Responsibilities:
-
Facilitate Instructions: Facilitates faculty instruction of professional curriculum to veterinary medical students with an emphasis on clinical techniques. Performs, assists, supervises and instructs veterinary students in care of critically ill patients, including: receiving emergency patients, patient restraint and handling, initial examination, patient history, proper aseptic technique, site preparation, placing and maintaining IV catheters, placing nasogastric tubes, refluxing stomach contents, collecting patient’s blood, urine and tissue samples, monitoring patient status (TPR, vitals and pain, etc.), administering fluid therapy, administering medications (IM, IV, PO, Sub-Q), administering emergency medications, performing CPR techniques, keeping patients cleaned and groomed, bandage changes, administering and monitoring patient diet as prescribed.

Organization and Infection Control: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Performs and instructs students and co-workers in proper infection control and other hospital policies and procedures. Sets up and cleans stalls, treatment areas and exam rooms. Performs record keeping. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs and solutions.

Information Management: Assures proper hospital information management. Enters hospital fees and patient data into the hospital’s computer information system, assuring all charges generated from treatments, procedures and supplies are correctly entered. Monitors and records physiological data into patient medical records. Records all medications given. Maintains hospital stall census.

Back-up Support: Provides back up support to other services within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and performs additional duties as directed such as client relations, receiving and discharging patients, assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, treating patients hospitalized in wards.

General: Provides physical restraint for safe handling of patient animals, lifts (infrequently) heavy loads, exercises patients. Maintains and operates point of care laboratory equipment.

Patient Care: Performs and assists with pre-op, intra-op, and post-op patient care and anesthesia procedures. Performs and instructs student in surgical site preparation. Assists with patient induction and positioning. Maintains patients under surgical anesthesia. Prepares surgical suites for surgical procedures by setting up instrument tables, equipment, and setting up surgery case carts with supplies. Performs and instructs others in intra-operative “circulation” assistance, and post-op patient recovery, perform peri-operative Infection Control Procedures, operate and maintain surgical and anesthesia patient equipment.

Coverage: Provides weekday, weekend, and holiday on-call technical support as needed. May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends or “on-call” duty. Performs other duties as assigned
