Antioch University
Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement (Remote)
Department: University Development
Classification: Staff, Full-Time, Exempt
Reports to: Chancellor
Location: Remote
Compensation: $200,000.00 – $225,000.00
Position Overview
Antioch University, a founding member of the newly announced, national, higher education system known as the Coalition for the Common Good, (“CCG”), seeks an experienced leader in academic institutional advancement to build on its historic mission of advancing social justice and its reputation for innovation and excellence in order to secure its future.
Antioch has been a leader in higher education since its founding in 1852. Furthermore, it has been a leader in inclusion and equal educational opportunity with a commitment to the common good from its very beginning. Its founder, Horace Mann, was at the forefront of the movements to abolish slavery and to establish a system of universal public education as necessary cornerstones of democracy. He is regarded as the father of public education in the United States, founding the first “common schools” that were nonsectarian, free, and open to all genders and races. Under his leadership, Antioch was one of the first colleges in the United States to admit Black students, a decade before the Civil War, and one of the first to employ female faculty on the same basis as their male counterparts. In his last graduation speech before he died in 1859, he beseeched the graduates to “win victories for humanity.”
Antioch University has continued in this progressive, outward-facing tradition of teaching civic engagement, advancing social justice, and protecting and defending democracy. It has recently moved this commitment to a new level as a founding member of the Coalition for the Common Good. No one would have imagined a decade ago that we would be confronting a growing set of challenges to the core of our democracy. It is in that context that the CG was founded to model new approaches for higher education to promote, champion, and educate for democracy, social justice and the common good. It is a compelling mission that comes at a pivotal inflection point in American history.
We believe the new mission statement will resonate well with alumni and other potential donors who understand the existential threats we face as a nation. It is with that backdrop that Antioch University seeks leadership to help secure funding that will materially and substantially advance that important mission.
Coalition for the Common Good – Mission Statement
Coalition for the Common Good is a network of affiliated private, nonprofit colleges and universities that, through collaboration and integration, provide transformative education and lifelong learning. Together, we are dedicated to promoting the common good, including democracy, social justice, equity, inclusion, and engaged global citizenship.
The Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement (VCIA) will lead Antioch University’s comprehensive institutional advancement efforts. Antioch is primarily a graduate school with graduate and doctoral degrees in psychology and counseling therapies, education, environmental studies, fine arts, business, and leadership and change. Antioch also has an adult degree completion program for those seeking to finish their BA degree. Through our affiliation with Otterbein University and the CCG, Antioch is adding graduate programs in Nursing, Allied health, and more. Antioch’s programs are offered in multiple locations including Keene, New Hampshire; Central Ohio; Los Angeles, CA; Santa Barbara, CA; and Seattle, WA. Its teaching modalities include classroom-based, low-residency, fully online, and hybrid approaches.
The VCIA will serve as a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and will work closely with this group to establish priorities and devise strategies to meet University-wide objectives including major and planned giving, capital campaigns, the annual fund, alumni engagement, corporate and foundation relations, donor relations, sponsored programs and development services. Further, the VCIA will lead and build a comprehensive advancement team able to implement and fulfill such a strategy and program.
The VCIA also will play a crucial and central role in leading and supporting advancement opportunities provided by the Coalition for the Common Good, working closely with the Coalition President, Vice Presidents and its Board of Directors. The successful VCIA will advance Antioch’s mission to further “social, racial, economic, and environmental justice” by enhancing the University’s institutional capacity and by building internal and external relationships essential to strengthening that capacity, always in the context of the Coalition for the Common Good.
The VCIA will manage an initial staff of 3.5 FTEs. The VCIA will build a culture of high achievement and accountability, further integrate the development program to allow for strong and professional relationships across the various functions and throughout the University, and ensure that the development staff effectively engage Antioch’s alumni, supporters and friends in the life of the institution.
