Summary of Duties:

The Vice Dean for Educational Affairs (VDEA) in the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine oversees the Department of Educational Affairs, which encompasses the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) educational program, Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, medical education simulation program and the clinical regional campuses. The role will also foster the development of community partnerships to gain capital support of current and future programs.

This is a 12-month annual, continuous, open rank, career track faculty role with sub-track and rank determined at time of selection based on incumbent’s qualifications. The career sub-track may be Clinical or Scholarly as described in section titled “Sub-tracks for Academic or Extension Faculty” of the Faculty Manual [section number IB1.c)(2)]. In accordance with the Faculty Manual, the additional administrative role of Vice Dean is fixed-term and serves at the discretion of the Dean and/or Executive Vice President of Health Sciences regardless of term.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Undergraduate Medical Education  40%

The VDEA oversees the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) areas and the Associate Deans in Assessment and Evaluation, Curriculum, GME and Clinical Education. The VDEA ensures the UME curricular development meets desired competencies, objectives and accreditation standards and provides strategic leadership and direction in assessment and evaluation procedures to assure educational excellence. The VDEA collaborates directly with all leaders of the Department of Clinical Sciences to ensure alignment and execution of the UME education. 

Clinical Campus Partnerships  25%

The VDEA oversees the efforts of the Associate Deans for Clinical Education (ADCE) at the regional campuses in engagement of statewide relationship building, preceptor identification and recruitment, clinical campus operations and the MD student education. The VDEA collaborates with the Departments of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology as well as Speech and Hearing Sciences to ensure program success at the clinical campuses and development of infrastructure for interprofessional education.

Graduate Medical Education   25%

The VDEA is responsible for the strategic management and operational oversight of the College of Medicine Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs. The VDEA oversees the efforts of the Associate Dean for GME with the goal of working with clinical partners to increase the number and capacity of GME programs throughout WA. The VDEA stewards the existing GME program clinical relationships and works strategically with the Associate Dean for GME to identify and create new, fiscally sustainable GME programs particularly in underserved communities.

Development 5%

The VDEA collaborates with the development staff and the WSU Foundation to develop capital resources to support new and existing programs.

Other  5%

The VDEA will provide miscellaneous duties related to the College and University missions as directed by the Dean.

Required Qualifications—All tracks and Ranks:

  • MD, DO, or equivalent degree
  • 5 years of direct experience in leadership of medical school operations and accreditation activities.
  • Over 5 years of experience as a GME program director or equivalent administrative role in a major health system setting or an ACGME accredited medical school.
  • More than 10 years of experience as a licensed and board-certified physician in the direct provision of patient care.
  • Significant experience in the precepting of undergraduate and graduate medical education program students/trainees.
  • Experience in LCME and ACGME accreditation requirements
  • Experience in Curriculum, Evaluation and Assessment
  • Ability to drive and travel for work purposes

Additional Required Qualifications for Candidates in all tracks at Associate rank:

  • Current or previous appointment at the Associate rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience determined to be equivalent.
  • Record of accomplishments applicable to the sub-track in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship and/or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for associate rank.

Additional Required Qualifications for Candidates in all tracks at Full professor rank:

  • Current or previous appointment at the full professor rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience determined to be equivalent.
  • Record of accomplishments applicable to the sub-track in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship and/or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for full professor rank.

Preferred Qualifications —All tracks and Ranks:

  • Extensive experience with LCME and ACGME, including accreditation site visits
  • Experience as an ACGME Designated Institutional Official
  • Experience in Community-based medical school operations
  • Experience as a Regional Medical Campus Dean

Annual Salary: The base salary for the Career Track position is $218,530 – $350,000 at 100% FTE. The compensation is commensurate with qualifications, earned degree, track and rank determination. In addition to the salary reflected above, while serving as Vice Dean, this position will be eligible for an annual temporary administrative stipend.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
