Position Details

General Statement Founded in 1893 as a Land-grant institution, Montana State University (MSU) is composed of nine academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. MSU is the largest university in Montana, as well as the largest land-grant institution in the surrounding states, offering more than 190 baccalaureates, graduate certificates, master’s, and doctoral degree programs. The University’s annual budget exceeds $560 million, with more than 1,110 faculty members, 2,200 staff members, and nearly 17,000 students, including over 2,000 graduate students, who represent all 50 states and 71 countries. MSU is one of only 146 institutions in the U.S. to receive an R1 designation for its very high research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The Vice President for Student Success is an important member of the University’s executive leadership team responsible for leading significant university student operations as well as contributing heavily to the strategic direction of the unit. Reporting to the President, the VP will lead with integrity, enthusiasm, and dedication to service excellence in a highly collaborative manner with constituencies at all levels of the institution.
The units reporting to Student Success work to foster a holistic collegiate experience for the students at Montana State University in ways that improve student retention to graduation and support student mental health and wellbeing. Each department supports students in their academic goals and personal journeys while they work to become graduates of Montana State University. In support of the MSU mission, Student Success aims to enhance the learning environment of the University; support students in the attainment of their educational objectives; foster in students a sense of responsibility, self-directedness, community, and a positive identity with Montana State University.
The Vice President for Student Success is responsible for the leadership, direction, supervision, and evaluation of the Student Success units which include:

Duties and Responsibilities The Vice President for Student Success at Montana State University provides strategic leadership and vision for establishing and maintaining an institutional focus on student success inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Provides leadership and administration for Student Success and its units.
  • Fosters collaboration between Student Success and Academic Affairs, as well as all other university units.
  • Inspires and mentors the Directors and staff of the offices within Student Success to effectively accomplish the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Serves as the University’s final appellate and authority on decisions involving student conduct sanctions, safety admissions standards, leaves of absence, Financial Aid, etc.
  • Establishes and implements short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures.
  • Prioritizes initiatives in accordance with the University strategic plan and oversees the development and successful completion of strategic and operational plans.
  • Advocates on behalf of students.
  • Fosters collaborative relationships among students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Assists in crafting a welcoming and vibrant campus culture that promotes the academic achievement and personal development of all students.
  • Monitors and evaluates operations, staff, programs, support services and activities to ensure areas are efficient and effective in achieving University goals while being student-centered; initiates changes required for improvement.
  • Maintains an awareness of student needs in order to develop, implement, and coordinate programs to address those needs.
  • Maintains a visible profile on campus and engages with the faculty, student, alumni, and staff communities.
  • Ensures compliance with federal/state regulations and university policies.
  • Serves on the President’s Executive Team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s Degree or higher.
  • Demonstrated administrative experience, including planning, resource and personnel management.
  • Successful experience in program development (planning, implementing, evaluating and advocating) of a wide range of programs with a student-centered approach.
  • Demonstrated success creating enhancements to student-centered learning, student development and inclusive campus culture.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Terminal degree.
  • Senior-level experience within student affairs.
  • Substantial experience, innovation and success with student recruitment and enrollment strategies.
  • The Successful Candidate Will
    • Be a dynamic and gifted leader who will build on Montana State University’s strengths as a Land-Grant institution and advance its mission with vision and energy.
    • Possess or learn a broad knowledge of the multiple and diverse units in the Student Success Division.
    • Demonstrate a strong sense of personal integrity and the willingness to listen and learn.
    • Possess or learn knowledge of governmental programs, agencies, and laws that specifically address university and student issues, including compliance with Federal rules and laws such as Title IV, Title IX, the Clery Act, and FERPA.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to the support of innovative and best practices in Student Affairs.
    • Possess the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, public officials and alumni.
    • Possess the ability to think intuitively, make effective decisions, and take independent action.
    • Be skilled at communicating – in writing and through public speaking – with enthusiasm and effectiveness with a wide range of constituents from students and parents to presidents, faculty, legislators, and the media.
    • Demonstrate a record of, and commitment to, promoting equal opportunity among students, faculty and staff.
    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
    • In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
    • This position is located in an office environment with daily interactions with student, staff and faculty, and is subject to frequent interruptions.
    • Travel to off-campus locations may be required.
    • This position is subject to evening hours and weekends.
