Mission and objectives
As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; inclusive and sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience. UNDP supports countries in their path towards the Sustainable Development Goals through country programmes driven by national development choices. Through its new strategic vision, UNDP will deliver concrete, bold solutions, which harness innovation and partnerships and bolster global efforts towards the Sustainable Development Goals through six signature solutions, including: poverty and inequality, governance, resilience, environment, energy and gender equality.
Context
As outlined in the UNDP Strategic Plan 2022-2025, UNDP’s support to countries aims to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions, accelerating structural transformation for sustainable development and supporting governments to build resilience to shocks and crises. UNDP’s commitment to addressing HIV and other major health and development challenges is based on the principles that health is a driver for and an indicator and outcome of development, and that actions across a wide range of development sectors have a significant impact on health outcomes. As a development agency, UNDP focuses on addressing the social, economic, legal, commercial and environmental determinants of health. It embraces a human rights-based approach and looks through a gender equity lens to address the underlying drivers of health inequities. With a focus on community engagement, environmental conservation, and socio-economic progress, UNDP Sierra Leone aims to communicate its impact effectively to a broader audience.
