Main purpose of the job:

The British Office Sudan (BOS) is recruiting a Communications Officer based in Port Sudan, with possible relocation to Khartoum in the future.

The role supports routine communications through media and online channels, including drafting content, supporting events and visits, and working with local media. It involves sharing clear, people focused information and monitoring media coverage.

This position suits someone with strong writing and social media skills in both English and Arabic who can work independently while staying closely connected to colleagues across multiple locations. Roles and responsibilities:

Communications Management

• Plan and deliver communications activities for BOS using its public platforms.
• Support senior staff with clear advice on communications planning and messaging.
• Work closely with programme and policy teams to ensure communications are accurate, consistent and well-coordinated.

Communications Campaigns

• Plan and deliver communications activities and campaigns for different audiences.
• Choose appropriate communications channels based on the Sudanese media environment.
• Review the impact of communications work and use feedback to improve future activities.

Digital and Social Media

• Plan, draft and publish content for BOS social media channels.
• Manage BOS’s online presence and monitor audience engagement.
• Keep website information accurate and up to date.
• Follow Sudanese media and social media trends and suggest new content ideas when appropriate.

Media Monitoring and Reporting

• Prepare daily press and media summaries.
• Monitor Sudanese media and report on key trends and developments.
• Track and summarise media and social media reactions to major news and events.

Media Relations

• Build and maintain professional relationships with media, including journalists and content creators.
• Support media engagement activities such as interviews, opinion pieces and press briefings.

Events and Visits

• Support practical arrangements for official visits related to Sudan.
• Help plan and deliver events.
• Provide communications support for official visits and events.

Communications Materials

• Produce clear and accessible communications materials, including newsletters, bulletins, videos, brochures and infographics.

Communication skills

• Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and Arabic.
• Proven ability to write clear, accurate and engaging content for social media and other communication channels.
• Strong translation skills between English and Arabic, ensuring meaning and tone are accurately conveyed.

Media and Digital Skills

• Experience using a range of social media platforms and creating digital content.
• Good understanding of the Sudanese media environment and how news is shared locally.
• Ability to plan and deliver communications activities from idea stage through to delivery and review.
• Awareness of current media trends, audience habits and digital communication tools.
