Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy Bangkok is a large diplomatic mission of around 150 staff delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives including on prosperity, trade, security, open societies, consular services and law enforcement. This is an exciting opportunity to join our diverse team.
You will join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Thailand team which promotes exports to Thailand of British goods and services, investment from Thailand to the UK, and mutual improved market access to help grow our bilateral trade.
As the Head of Investment, you will lead a team of two investment advisers attracting high-value investment into the UK. You will be responsible for setting strategic priorities, leveraging and directing resources, improving team capability and driving performance.
This has been a success story over recent years, with major investments now spanning renewable energy, research and development, food and drink, football and real estate. This exciting and high-profile role will play a key part in building on this success.
Day-to-day you will engage and influence a wide range of senior stakeholders. You will utilise strong interpersonal skills to build deep and trusting relationships with senior executives. You will balance competing priorities, collaborate with teams across the Embassy and in the UK, utilise data and analysis to develop strategy, and carry out promotional activities and support UK ministerial visits to Thailand.
The role is suited to a commercially-minded self-starter who will relish the opportunity to engage with senior businesspeople across a wide range of innovative sectors – and, in doing so, grow the UK-Thailand commercial partnership.
DBT Thailand team works closely with our Headquarters teams in London, regional and local colleagues, representatives of the three Devolved Administrations of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, with a key objective of driving trade and foreign investment into the UK. Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve: You will be responsible for the strategic decision making of the team, including:
Delivering against targets You will design and promote campaigns across critical sectors (e.g. Technology and Energy) to land Thai capital and foreign direct investments into the UK, in line with the team’s targets. This will be through planning and leading a programme of investment activities, such as events, missions and company meetings and engagements; through account management of existing accounts and target companies; and through supporting projects, including high value projects that are outside of campaigns. Account management You will directly manage the team’s most important company accounts, and oversee the team’s wider accounts, with the goal of influencing senior business leaders to invest in the UK; understanding corporate strategies and barriers to investment; and influencing UK policy design to improve the investment environment. You will use research, data, and analysis to ensure we are focussed on the highest value accounts – and consider new and innovate ways of maintaining close and productive client relationships. You will also be responsible for ensuring that the team are accurately reporting activity on our bespoke CRM system. Sector expertise Leveraging strong UK networks, you will develop big picture knowledge and expertise of key sectors, and stay up to date on developments, including UK strategies and policy, investments, opportunities and barriers, and relevant trade policy changes. You will ensure that these developments are understood at the appropriate level across the Thailand network. Team management You will line manage two Investment Advisors taking responsibility for agreeing objectives, performance management and employee development. You will also monitor your own and your team’s performance against agreed targets and act to keep work on track. Corporate 10% of your time will involve contributing to the broader goals of the Thai network. This will involve a role in crisis response, as well as other roles such as leading a committee or a cross-network events. Other: In times of peak operation demand, work flexibly within the Section and within the Embassy All staff will be expected to make a corporate contribution to the smooth running of the British Embassy, either through a committee membership or another voluntary role. Working patterns:
This is a full time role – 36 hours/week, Monday to Friday.
We are currently operating a hybrid working pattern with at least 60% of the time being spent in the office.
The Embassy has a smarter working policy and is committed to offering flexible working patterns balanced with the operational requirements of the role. In crisis/emergency situations you may need to work as required to support the Embassy response, sometimes on a shift pattern, which may result in unsociable hours and/or weekend working.
