Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Bangkok is a large diplomatic mission of around 150 staff delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives including on economic and sustainable development, trade, security, open societies, consular services and law enforcement. This is an exciting opportunity to join our diverse team. 

The main purpose of the Security Protocol Officer (SPO) is to support the provision of security to the British Embassy Bangkok.   This will be done in close conjunction with the other Security Protocol Officer and the Post Security Manager. The SPO will also be involved in the delivery of business facilitation of the Embassy by assisting in the maintenance of links with relevant external agencies such as the EOT, the Thai Police, Customs and immigration, etc.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Security

  • Assist escorting VVIPs, VIP and other officials through Immigration and Customs process at the airport.
  • Deputise for the Post Security Manager (PSM) in times of absence.
  • Formally request for Special Branch police, EOD, K9 and traffic police when required for official function.
  • Assist initiating Police checks as part of the security clearance produces for new staff and assist co-ordinate the overall security clearance protocols.
  • Conduct regular radio/communications tests for all UK based officers.
  • Translate security-related documents and act as interpreter at meetings with Thai officials as required.
    Protocol
  • Assist managing the process regarding the acquisition and maintenance of the permanent/temporary airport pass, and tarmac access for staff such as HMA, ROSM, Post Security Manager, DIT, Consular team, Border Force team, RTSS team.
  • Managing the process for obtaining and renew driving licenses for UK based officers.
  • Liaise with immigration as is appropriate.

Other

  • Managing the process for the procedures regarding the import entries for the clearance of Diplomatic mail bags.
  • Liaise with AOT and Customs authorities and complete all necessary forms.
  • Official purchase for official requested by various sections and/or ordering ad hoc items i.e., locally sourced security equipment and general items necessary for business facilitation. This extends to other local regional missions as requested.
  • Supply and monitor for official and private communication equipment i.e. True satellite,
  • Maintain and continue to build liaison contacts with external stakeholders such as the Royal Thai police, Customs and Immigration, Airport Authorities, etc.
  • In times of peak operation demand, work flexibly within the Section and within the Embassy including working unsocial hours in an emergency or during official visits.
  • All staff will be expected to make a corporate contribution to the smooth running of the British Embassy, either through a committee membership or another voluntary role.

  • Flexible, resilient, patient and able to deal with a range of situations.
  • Ability to a display a high level of discretion and confidentiality.
  • IT Literate
  • Full Thai Driving Licence (no convictions)

Language requirements: 

Language: Thai and English

Level of language required: Good level of English; reading, writing and listening.

  • Experience living in or understanding of the United Kingdom and British working culture.

The British Embassy Bangkok encourages all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training (courses) and informal (job-shadowing, coaching, on-the-job training etc.). The majority of our formal L&D opportunities are drawn from FCDO resources. Working patterns:

This is a full time role – 36 hours/week, Monday to Friday.

We are currently operating a hybrid working pattern with staff expected to work from the Embassy for 60% of their working week.

The Embassy has a smarter working policy and is committed to offering flexible working patterns balanced with the operational requirements of the role. In crisis/emergency situations you may need to work as required to support the Embassy response, sometimes on a shift pattern, which may result in unsociable hours and/or weekend working.
