Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Bangkok is a large diplomatic mission of around 150 staff delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives including on prosperity, trade, security, open societies, consular services and law enforcement. This is an exciting opportunity to join our diverse team.  
 
You will join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Thailand team which promotes exports to Thailand of British goods and services, investment from Thailand to the UK, and mutual improved market access to help grow our bilateral trade. 

As a Technology Sector Adviser, the successful candidate will focus on supporting and growing UK technology exports into Thailand. This has been a success story over recent years, with exports spanning telecoms, cyber security, AI and data analytics. This exciting and high-profile role will play a key part in building on this success.

Day-to-day you will maintain and develop a pipeline of export opportunities under the direction of the Head of Technology and Investment. You will carry out research to identify new commercial opportunities for UK technology companies, manage relationships with senior industry contacts, carry out promotional activities and assist with the end-to-end delivery of technology-related projects with Thailand. You will need to be a self-starter, able to manage your own time effectively, evaluating options, impacts, risks and solutions – knowing when and how to seek advice from others.

DBT Thailand team works closely with our Headquarters teams in London, regional and local colleagues, representatives of the three Devolved Administrations of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, with a key objective of driving UK exports internationally. Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Account management – you will be responsible for managing company accounts and developing strong relationships with these companies to spot opportunities and deliver UK exports.
  • Develop a pipeline of export prospects – you will research, analyse and develop a target list of key Thai companies for engagement.
  • Delivering against targets – you will design and promote campaigns in order to deliver against your targets. This will be through taking forward export activity, such as seminars, inward and outward missions and company meetings and engagements.
  • Market expertise – you will develop a strong understanding of the Thailand and UK technology markets, and a strong network in industry and across government. You will use your expertise to develop a technology strategy, in order to help deliver our Country Trade Plan.
  • Project management – you will assist with the end-to-end delivery of a number of exciting digital-facing projects with Thailand, including overseeing engagements with delivery partners, tracking/reporting on project progress, and managing procurement aspects of delivery.
  • Supporting visit programmes for Ministers and officials working on technology.
  • Management – you will manage approx. 1 staff within the Technology Team. You will organise their workloads, define their work methods, and monitor work-flow in order to support export objectives.
  • Building a relationship with the relevant DBT UK Technology teams and engaging with them on the export opportunities in the Thai market.
  • Corporate contribution. 10% of your time will involve contributing to the broader goals of the Thai network. This will involve a role in crisis response, as well as other roles such as leading a committee or a cross-network events.

The EO will need to remain flexible to pick up new opportunities outside of these areas and to support across the team. This may include supporting the Head of Technology and Investment in work on technology across Southeast Asia.

All staff will be expected to make a corporate contribution to the smooth running of the British Embassy, either through a committee membership or another voluntary role.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a business facing and/or technology related job.
  • Deep understanding and experience of working with key stakeholders in Thailand’s market.
  • A proven track record of successful relationship management with high-level stakeholders and international clients.
  • Project management skills and experience delivering results against deadlines/targets.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills including in running meetings, giving presentations to external audiences and drafting high-quality briefings and readouts.
  • Strong administration and organisation skills.
  • Proven ability to manage staff and organise workloads.
  • Evidence of self-motivation, professionalism and the ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Evidence of adaptability and ability to prioritise against competing, challenging tasking.
  • A flexible and creative problem-solver, able to come up with innovative solutions to complex challenges.
  • Flexible and reactive to new issues and priorities.
  • IT proficiency – Using MS Office, Outlook and ability to learn FCDO systems.
  • Ability to travel within Thailand and Asia.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, including confidence in suggesting new ideas and challenging senior stakeholders.

  • Thai and English Language ability

Level of language required: 

  • A minimum English proficiency equivalent to IELTS level 6.5 (no official test result needed)

  • Experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Experience or knowledge of business in the UK or Thailand.
  • Analytical / statistical background.
  • Comfortable / experience in business teams and utilising data to understand trends.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

The British Embassy Bangkok encourages all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training (courses) and informal (job-shadowing, coaching, on-the-job training etc.). The majority of our formal L&D opportunities are drawn from FCDO resources. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training (‘lunch & learn’) or coaching/mentoring. All staff are eligible for 5 L&D days a year.

Working patterns:

This is a full time role – 36 hours/week, Monday to Friday.

We are currently operating a hybrid working pattern with staff expected to work from the Embassy for 60% of their working week.

The Embassy has a smarter working policy and is committed to offering flexible working patterns balanced with the operational requirements of the role. In crisis/emergency situations you may need to work as required to support the Embassy response, sometimes on a shift pattern, which may result in unsociable hours and/or weekend working.
