Main purpose of job:

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is responsible for promoting UK trade and investment with the rest of the world. Working within the British Embassy in Chile, as well as collaborating closely with DBT Latin America and Caribbean (LATAC) and UK colleagues, the successful applicant will drive deeper trading relations between the UK and Chile, increasing UK exports and contributing to economic growth and jobs.

As Business and Trade intern, you would support the creation of a pipeline of companies to deliver against commercial opportunities in Chile and UK, including through development and maintenance of internal databases and information management/KPI processes. You will support lead generation and understanding of demands and opportunities within the Chilean market by carrying out sector research and stakeholder mapping. You would also support the promotion of the UK within the Chilean market, supporting the organisation of events, including commercial elements of high profile cross-mission events in the different priority sectors (Mining, Infrastructure, Transport, Energy and Defence & Security). 
During the first month you will be supporting our team with our successful participation at the Exponor fair to take place in June – working directly with both our Mining Officer and Country Director in different tasks including, but no limited to, logistics, coordination, stakeholder engagement, etc. 

You will have the opportunity to participate from diverse commercial opportunities including meetings with relevant stakeholders, internationalisation and investment fairs, and internal and external events in order to develop your professional skills and experience to enhance your future career prospects. You will also collaborate closely with other Embassy colleagues to identify synergies and contribute to shared goals across the Mission. 
The internship will take place between May 2024 and November 2024 (depending on the starting date, for 6 months – with the possibility of extension for the same period of time under specific circumstances and requirements).

Roles and Responsibilities:

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Provide administrative support to (a) Commercial Officer(s) at the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) office in Santiago, including (but not limited to) business development, research and analysis of data within a designated sector, as well as strategic and logistical support.

•    Research: Help in the formulation of market research reports for British companies and the online management of customers. Assisting in the identification of new contractual opportunities for British businesses and developing internal briefings when needed. 
•    Event coordination: Support with the organisation of official events and visits, both with commercial focus and cross-Mission, including but not limited to the preparation of agendas, one-pagers, programme support, arrangement of meetings and other related logistic activities – with specific focus on the UK Embassy’s participation from Exponor in June 2024 as a first task upon arrival. 
•    Relations with stakeholders: Support maintain contact with local (private and public) stakeholders, keeping record of activities/contacts in the team’s databases and client relationship management system; Be able to identify and help obtain key contacts to support the commercial work of Officers and Senior Management when required; Attend meetings with private and public sector contacts and be able to take relevant notes where appropriate.
•    Provide cross-cutting support to the DBT team (and other Embassy sections if needed): Perform other tasks requested by the Commercial Officers, the Director and Deputy Director of DBT – which may include supporting other Departments locally or regionally (LATAC), and contribute to the corporate objectives of the British Embassy in Santiago and DBT LATAC. 
•    Information Management and Administrative Support: Help strengthen and maintaining information management systems up to date and monitor relevant KPIs for the team, as well as ensure and promote good use of databases across the team. 

  • The candidate must be able to have health/accidents insurance to cover the internship period – either supported by a University where the candidate is currently studying or by personal means. 

  • Related studies including, but not limited to, Political Sciences, Business Administration, Law, International Relations, etc.

  • He/she must be flexible, dynamic and pro-active.

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and Spanish, and excellent communication and presentation skills with both languages.

  • Knowledge in Microsoft Office package.

  • Must have the right to work and reside in Chile.

  • Interest in international trade and in strengthening international collaboration between countries.

Language requirements: 

Language: Spanish and English

Level of language required: 
Fluent written and spoken (CEFR C1 essential; C2 in at least one language preferable) 

  • Previous experience in market research, reporting/presenting results, and database management.
  • Interest in learning from various sectors throughout the duration of the internship, which will require staying informed on the national and international contingency of the priority sectors.
  • Experience in event organisation and delivery.

Opportunity to work from home for up to 2 days per week, subject to business needs. Other arrangements may be considered according to business needs.
