Main purpose of job:

Cooking and accountable for daily kitchen operations at the British High Commissioner’s residence in New Delhi (No.2, Rajaji Marg)

We reserve the right to review, revise or amend the roles and responsibilities from time to time reflecting the changing needs of business.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Exhibit excellent culinary talents by personally performing cooking tasks in continental cuisine.
  • Be able to read, understand and follow recipes in English.
  • Will be responsible to prepare; breakfast, lunch, dinner, afternoon tea snack, reception cocktail snacks, buffet, pre-plated meals for silver service as per event entered in the High Commissioner’s Diary.
  • Responsible for complete kitchen area ensuring high standards of organisation, hygiene and safety standards.
  • Maintain professional relations with the suppliers for placing orders and delivery of food and kitchen equipments.
  • Have a good network of contacts in order to bring in extra help of cooks during large events.
  • Have good knowledge of identifying high quality food products like: raw meat, poultry, sea food, vegetables, fruits, spices etc
  • Have good knowledge of food preservation, both raw and cooked
  • Maintain up-to-date financial records of shopping and cost of meals
  • Should maintain clear inventory of stock in kitchen and deep freeze (uncooked/cooked).
  • Determining food presentation and creating decorative and tempting food display.
  • Must be able to manage multiple events during peak season during Ministerial visits and large functions (every additional support will be available).
  • Liaise with the Head Gardener to seed majorly utilized vegetables during season at the Residence vegetable garden.
  • Should ensure handover of kitchen is in a presentable manner with all equipments cleaned and staged at the end of shift, for incoming shift or HC family’s usage in the same area..
  • Adaptable and flexible to changing food and cooking trends.
  • Encourage and builds mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members.
  • Ensure organization’s policies are followed fairly and consistently.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

  • Ordering with the respective supplier for raw material, equipment etc
  • Prepare food cost ledger of items ordered
  • Prepare meal cost

Language requirements:

Language: ENGLISH is preferred (understandable knowledge of English listening/speaking and reading to understand recipe)

Level of language required: Understandable English (Read / Write / Speak)

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

  • Excellent cooking skills (proven experience)
  • There will be opportunity to learn depending on the job based on requirement

Working patterns: Yes, there will be opportunity for flexible working pattern and duty will be as per shift / roster.

1. Staff Quarter with Bedroom+Lobby+Veranda+Bath/Toilet at the residence is provided for employee, spouse and dependent children.

     Dependent Children are categorized as below:

  • Boy child until the age of 21 years with full time education proof (otherwise 18 years if not studying).
  • Single / Unmarried daughters

 2. Summer and winter uniform set with safety shoes get provided

Essential on arrival:

  • Experience in Continental cuisine with minimum 6-8 years of experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in Baking desserts, bread, cookies, patisseries.
  • Must carry extreme hygiene standards and have good understanding of kitchen safety measures
  • Eye for detail in identifying exemplifying quality of raw material (raw meat items etc)
  • Must be prepared for a trade test/cooking test as part of the selection criterion.
  • Showcase skills of cooking experience.
  • Teamwork skill and attention to detail.

Desirable:

  • Recycle for the compost purpose

For British High Commission candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.

For other than BHC candidates, Salary range will be inclusive between INR 53,642 – 71,128 per month (depending on skills and experience) together with a 12% provident fund and 6% Superannuation Fund

Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.

Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

BHC will not be able to sponsor work visas or obtain/ assist with the special work permit from GOI. Offers of employment made to OCI card holders will be conditional upon candidates obtaining a special work permit.

This is not a permanent UK Civil Service position and does not attract diplomatic immunities and privileges (other than what an individual may already hold if they are a recognised partner/family member of a serving diplomat).

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. 

Please note – Provident Fund Transfer in and out from EPFO is not possible as BHC PF is managed by a private PF trust governed by Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. The staff still has the option to transfer out and in from a privately held PF trust which are not governed by EPFO.
