Be part of the Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) mission to drive more trade and investment between Latin America and the UK. We are currently seeking a Commercial Intern to join our team in Asuncion. 

The Department for Business and Trade is the Trade and Investment Promotion and Negotiation organisation for the UK. We promote British trade and investment across the world, we support UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. We have 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries.  

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the team responsible for driving trade and investment between the UK and Paraguay.

Roles and responsibilities:

The Commercial Intern will:

  • Provide assistance to the commercial team
  • Conduct market research for UK companies
  • Assist in responding to commercial enquiries from British companies looking to do business in Paraguay
  • Support DBT’s wider work at Post
  • Support in the organisation of events and visits
  • Periodically follow-up with commercial engagements
  • Prepare the preliminary work linked to commercial opportunities for the team to continue in the medium to long term
  • Log interactions on our internal CRM registry

  • Currently studying International Trade, International Relations or Economics.
  • Must have excellent computer skills, particularly MS Outlook and MS Office packages.
  • Should be a proactive and creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly.
  • Must be willing to work in a constantly changing multicultural environment.

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Spanish

Level of English required: Fluent in written and oral communication (equivalent of C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – CEFR)

Must have the legal status to live and work in Paraguay.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount. 

Working patterns:  

Part-Time, Fixed Term (with possibility of renewal), Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 1 PM, 20 hours per week.

The British Embassy in Asuncion offers flexible working patterns, including options to work from home with line management approval within the embassy flexible working policy. The successful candidate may be asked to help with occasional evening/weekend engagements based on need, with appropriate compensation provied as per embassy policy.

The British Embassy in Asuncion is a small, but friendly team, with most staff filling multiple roles. Flexibility and teamwork are essential.
