Who are we?
The British Embassy in Dushanbe is part of a world-wide diplomatic network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are now looking to recruit a Communications and Projects Manager.
Main purpose of the role:
Manage the Embassy’s Communications and Public Diplomacy; manage a portfolio of small projects, ensuring these contribute to Embassy objectives; run post’s annual Chevening scholarship scheme; provide support to the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission where necessary.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The jobholder is responsible for the Embassy’s public diplomacy – media & digital communications. As part of this, you will support the Ambassador and other colleagues with local media engagements and proactively identify opportunities for these. We are looking for someone who will:
- develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy, drawing on the OASIS model to ensure targeted, engaging communications in English and Tajik languages that support the Embassy’s objectives.
- work with internal colleagues and implementing partners, to develop creative approaches to social and traditional media that showcase the work of the Embassy.
You will manage a portfolio of small projects, working with colleagues to identify projects that meet post’s objectives, using local knowledge to advise on what sort of projects are likely to be successful in the local environment. We are looking for someone who will:
- manage a portfolio of up to 5 small projects
- work with implementing partners to ensure value for money, accurate forecasting and budget expenditure and timely delivery.
- report on project outcomes and lessons learned as part of the annual project delivery cycle.
You will also be responsible for administering the UK’s Chevening scholarship scheme in Tajikistan. We are looking for someone who will:
- Develop and deliver online communications and in-person presentations to attract applicants from identified target groups.
- Organise and conduct interviews.
- Make arrangements for successful applicants to go to the UK, liaising with London colleagues on priorities, annual budgets and changes to the scheme.
- Keep in contact with Chevening and John Smith Trust Alumni and organise annual alumni events.
You may also be required to support overarching Embassy priorities, including visits and events, produce reporting and analysis on some thematic political issues, such as gender/GBV, and cover other colleagues in political section during periods of absence.

This is a full-time, permanent position, 35 hours net per week.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a professional background check and security clearance.
All applicants should have the right to live and work in Tajikistan. The British Embassy does not sponsor applications for work permits.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Dushanbe are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.
Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Tajikistan and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.

The British Embassy Dushanbe is committed to supporting the Learning and Development of all Staff, through a mix of formal training and on the job learning. You will be expected to complete a programme of induction training, including courses relevant to your role. This includes internal Communication Skills training as well as regular conferences and training on both communications and Chevening, where you will have the opportunity to share experience with colleagues from across the region. Beyond this, you will have access to the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office’s International Academy, as well as local and regional development opportunities.
Working patterns:
Flexible working can be considered, although the nature of communication work means you will often need to be in the office. Occasionally, this role may require you to travel or work outside normal working hours. The Embassy operates an informal flexible working arrangement where you can, in agreement with your line manager, take time off in lieu.
Whilst not extensive or regular, there will be opportunities to travel to other countries in Central Asia and the United Kingdom. A willingness and ability to travel, with good notice and on mutual agreement, would be welcome.
